1. Nine soldiers martyred as truck plunges into ravine in AJK
• Nine Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred and another four wounded as their truck plunged into a ravine in Bagh district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on August 21, 2022, officials said.
• `A Pakistan Army vehicle met an accident and fell into a nullah in Shujaabad, Bagh, early Sunday morning while on a routine military duty, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media affairs wing of the army, in a brief statement.
• `As a result, nine soldiers embraced Shahadat while four were injured,` it added.
• According to residents of the area, who took part in the rescue operation after the truck fell some 500 feet down into the ravine while negotiating a curve, seven soldiers lost their lives on the spot while two embraced martyrdom in the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Rawalakot
2. Jordanian princess arrives to review nutrition programme
• Princess Sarah Zeid of Jordan arrived in Karachi on August 21, 2022 on a week-long visit to Pakistan in her role as a Special Adviser on Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition of United Nations` World Food Programme (WFP).
• On her arrival at Jinnah International Airport, the Jordanian princess was received by federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri and Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab.
• Princess Sarah was visiting the country to acknowledge the efforts of the government, the WFP and its partners in addressing malnutrition, especially maternal malnutrition
3. IMF board members get staff reports
• Pakistan has moved closer to clinching a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as all 24 members of the Fund`s executive board have received copies of a staff report required to complete the process, diplomatic and IMF.
• The board is meeting on Aug 29 to consider the report on the competition of seventh and eighth reviews of $6 billion loan package signed in 2019. The board will also consider to extend the facility till June 2023.
• The documents distributed among the members included a letter of intent from Pakistan, spelling out the country`s plans to meet the IMF`s conditions for reforming the economy.
• Pakistan had also submitted a memorandum of understanding on economic and financial policies, along with a technical MoU submitted by the IMF team.
4. Police to hire more women as investigators
• The Lahore police higher-ups have given a green signal to make more appointments of lady police officers after it received positive public feedback during the first 10 days of posting of six women officers as heads of the investigation wings at the city`s police stations.
• The Lahore police has six divisions and the appointments have been made at one police station of each division. Inspector Farhat was posted as incharge of investigation at Wahdat Colony police station, Sub-Inspector Sadaf Rasheed at Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Area police station, SI Sumaira Nazir at Model Town police station, SI Ambrin Rehman at the Defence A police station, SI Shazia Kausar at Akbari Gate and SI Sonia Liaquat was posted in-charge investigation at the Racecourse police station.
• Though it constituted nearly Eve per cent of the total postings in 84 police stations, the move was declared a positive sign to increase the women representation in the police
5. Shells rain down on city near Ukraine`s Nplant
• Artillery shells rained down on a city close to Europe`s biggest nuclear plant on Saturday night and Russian missiles hit targets near Odesa, a Ukrainian Black Sea port and a grain export hub, as the war headed for its six-month milestone on Aug 24.
• The day will also mark 31 years of Ukraine`s independence from Soviet rule and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a nightly video address called for vigilance, saying Moscow could try `something particularly ugly`.
• As Ukraine prepared to mark its independence day embroiled in a war that has flattened towns and cities, killed thousands and forced millions to flee, military and regional officials reported more Russian strikes on targets in the east and south of the country
