6. Japan mulls long-range missile upgrades to `counter China`

• Japan is considering the deployment of more than 1,000 long-range cruise missiles to increase its ability to counter growing regional threats from China, Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported on August 21, 2022.
• The country plans to upgrade its existing surface to-ship missiles to extend their range from 100 kilometres to about 1,000 kilometres, which would be enough to reach Chinese coastal areas as well as North Korea, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources.
• Upgrades would also need to be made to allow Japan`s existing ships and aircraft to be able to fire the new missiles, which could hit land-based targets, the newspaper reported


7. Governor of Indiana latest US official to visit Taiwan

• The governor of Indiana arrived in Taipei on August 21, 2022, becoming the latest US official to visit Taiwan and defying pressure from China for such trips not to happen.
• China has been carrying out war games and drills near Taiwan since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a two-day visit to Taipei earlier this month. Last week a second group of US lawmakers visited Taiwan.
• Governor Eric Holcomb tweeted that he would also be visiting South Korea, while Taiwan`s presidential office said he would meet President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning


8. Albania puzzles over military factory `intruders` from Russia and Ukraine

• Albania said on August 21, 2022 it was investigating why two Russians and a Ukrainian had tried to enter a military factory and police detained four Czech nationals also close to another military plant.
• The defence ministry said late on Saturday that two of its soldiers had been slightly injured while detaining a 24-year-old man from Russia who had entered the grounds of the Gramsh military factory and was trying to take photos. He resisted arrest and usedspray against the soldiers.
• Two others, a 33-year-old Russian woman and a Ukrainian man aged 25, were arrested nearby


9. Daughter of `Putin`s brain` killed in car bombing

• The daughter of Alexander Dugin, a hardline Russian ideologue close to President Vladimir Putin, has been killed in a car bombing on Moscow`s outskirts, authorities said on Sunday.
• According to family members quoted by Russian media, Dugin a vocal supporter of Kremlin`s offensive in Ukraine was the likely target of the blast as his daughter borrowed his car at the last minute.
• Daria Dugina was killed when a bomb placed in the Toyota Land Cruiser went off as she drove on a highway near the village of Bolshie Vyzyomy, some 40 kilometres outside Moscow, Russia`s Investigative Committee said in a statement


10. Babar, Naseem star as Pakistan edge Dutch to sweep ODI series

• Captain Babar Azam and fast bowler Naseem Shah starred as Pakistan edged the Netherlands by just nine runs in the third and final One-day International here at Hazelaarweg on August 21, 2022.
• The Netherlands were all out for 197 in the last over in which they had needed 14 runs for a first-ever victory over Pakistan.
• Tight bowling had restricted Pakistan to 206 all out with Babar top scoring with 91.
• In reply, Tom Cooper (62) and Vikramjit Singh (50) top scored for the Dutch but teenage fast bowler Shah, with 5-33, proved key as Pakistan swept the series 3-0
