1. Minister admits `limits to govt writ` in missing persons cases
• Describing those involved in `enforced disappearances` of political workers, human rights activists and other individuals as violators of the Constitution, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on September 20, 2022 claimed to have taken up the matter in line with the premier`s directives, which included a comprehensive plan to address the issue that, he said, was `more painful than death`.
• However, talking to reporters after meeting coalition partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) at the party`s temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad, the interior minister apparently conceded the government had limited writ in this regard.
• When asked that some enforced disappearance cases dated back to the previous governments of the PML-N and PPP in the centre, he said: `There`s no denying and we all know that how much writ successive governments have had and [the current one] still has in this regard and what are its other aspects
2. One soldier martyred in cross-border attack from Afghanistan
• A Pakistan Army soldier embraced martyrdom in an exchange of fire with the terrorists in Dwatoi area of North Waziristan, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
• The attackers opened fire on the security forces from inside Afghanistan on Monday, the ISPR has claimed.
• The security forces responded in a befitting manner and as per credible intelligence reports, terrorists suffered heavy casualties, the statement added.
• The martyred sepoy has been identified as Nazar Muhammad, 34, hailing from Balochistan`s Jafferabad area
3. World leaders join Pakistan for SOS on flood and debt
• `Pakistan is drowning, not only in floodwater but in debt` too, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif urged the international community on September 20, 2022 to stay engaged with the country as it deals with this huge humanitarian crisis.
• Pakistan and France, meanwhile, agreed to identify ways and means to support efforts to tackle the challenge caused by the floods and Paris offered to host an international conference before the end of the year to help Islamabad rebuild in a climate-resilient manner.
• `I recently saw it with my own eyes in Pakistan where one-third of the country is submerged by a `monsoon on steroids`,` said the UN chief during a forceful address to world leaders gathered for the opening day of the General Assembly`s high-level debate
4. UNICEF regrets $39m appeal `less than a third funded`
• The United Nations` children`s fund (UNICEF) has regretted that its funding appeal of $39 million for Pakistan`s flood-hit children is still less than a third funded and that needs of the children will only continue to grow.
• `The world needs to come together and help the children in Pakistan. Together we can save lives by delivering life-saving health, nutrition and education services to every child in Pakistan who needs it the most,` it said.
• UNICEF Pakistan chief field officer in Balochistan, Gerida Birukila, told newsmen in Geneva on Tuesday that next week marked a month since catastrophic floods uprooted more than 3.4 million children from their homes in Pakistan.
• `The rains and floods have already claimed the lives of more than 550 children
5. `0.5 million die of wrong medication every year`
• On average 18.3 per cent of adverse events in hospitals occur due to medication errors, while approximately 3pc of hospital deaths are caused by these incidents, and in Pakistan, around 0.5 million people die each year due to such errors.
• These observations were made by health experts while speaking at a webinar titled `Medication without harm` held here on Tuesday.
• Punjab Healthcare Commission Chief Executive Officer Dr Muhammad Saqib Aziz chaired the event. Some other senior officials of the commission also attended the event
