1. Court defers CM poll as police `seal` GB assembly
• The election for a new chief minister of Gilgit Baltistan could not be held on July 5, 2023 after GB Supreme Appellate Court postponed the polling, slated for 3pm, following a petition that challenged the schedule citing a violation of GB assembly rules.
• The decision of the court came hours after a heavy contingent of the police entered the assembly premises at about 11am and forced assembly staffers and journalists to exit the building.
• Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate had convened the GB assembly session at 10am and issued the schedule as well, with voting slated to be held at 3pm in the assembly hall
2. Fingers crossed as govt assures IMF no new tax amnesty on the cards
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on July 5, 2023 expressed the hope that the $3 billion shortterm bailout for the country would be given final approval by the International Monetary Fund board when it meets on July 12 and vowed to fulfil all commitments made to the lender.
• Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad to commemorate 10 years of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the premier pointed out that a staff-level agreement had already been finalised.
• After eight months of negotiations, both sides signed the staff-level deal on Friday. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has said Pakistan will receive a first instalment of $1.1 billion, but the IMF board`s approval is needed before funds can be disbursed
3. SBP refuses to name $3bn loan beneficiaries
• Reluctant to publicly disclose the names of the 620 beneficiaries who received a $3 billion `soft loan` disbursed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government during the Covid-19 pandemic, the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said that he would prefer to share details with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in an in-camera meeting.
• The PAC, which convened on Wednesday, was informed that SBP had executed the soft loan scheme through commercial banks and that revealing the details of the beneficiaries would breach the confidentiality agreement between the banks and their clients .
• These arguments did not sit well with MNA Barjees Tahir, who said: `Just tell us the names of these 620 people
4. NA panel okays bill against multiple candidacies
• The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Law and Justice on July 5, 2023 gave a nod to the constitutional amendment bill seeking a ban on candidates contesting elections on multiple seats.
• The bill was introduced by Maulana Akbar Chitrali seeking amendments to the Article 223 of the Constitution, which allowed candidates to contest elections on multiple seats. The bill was admitted by a majority vote and then sent to Standing Committee on Law and Justice for further deliberations.
• According to an estimate, Rs46 billion is required for elections on national and provincial seats and if this amount is divided per seat, the cost comes to Rs100 million for each seat
5. `Record` rains claim nine lives in Punjab
• Two heavy spells of rain on July 5, 2023 claimed nine lives in Punjab, seven among them in Lahore, with the Met Department warning of more, possibly deadlier, showers to follow over the next three days.
• Detailing the deaths, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that three people were electrocuted in the provincial capital as Lahore Electric Supply Company`s infrastructure submerged during rain, along with better parts of the city. Even posh areas like Gulberg and Defence Housing Authority turned into pools.
• Three persons died in the city when their roofs could not withstand torrential spells, accompanied by strong winds and one person each drowned in Lahore and Layyah as rainwater flooded low lying areas of both cities
