1. President and premier agree to disagree on caretaker PM
Bad blood between President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif resurfaced on Friday when the former wrote to the premier, asking him to appoint a caretaker prime minister by Saturday (today).
PM Shehbaz, clearly displeased by the letter, questioned why the president was in a hurry and insinuated that he might not have read the Constitution.
The delay in nominating a caretaker prime minister was apparently because Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz, generally believed to be a `friendly opposition leader`, came out to be a different man, as he had been insisting on his candidate instead of agreeing to the names suggested by the PML-N, sources privy to the current political situation
2. Governor dissolves Sindh Assembly
The Sindh Assembly stood dissolved on Friday after Governor Kamran Tessori signed the summary forwarded to him by outgoing Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for its dissolution, bringing an end to the PPP government in the province.
As per the law, Mr Shah will continue to hold the office till the appointment of a caretaker chief minister. However, his cabinet stands dissolved.
According to the Constitution, the governor shall dissolve the provincial assembly if so advised by the chief minister; and the provincial assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, stand dissolved at the expiration of forty eight hours after the chief minister has so advised
3. Ordinary bill cannot alter court`s review power: SC
In an anxiously awaited decision, the country`s highest court on Friday struck down the Supreme Court (Review of Judgements and orders) Act 2023, declaring that parliament had gone beyond its legislative competence through its enactment.
`This [law] appears to be an attempt to remodel the Constitutional scheme relating to judicature and potentially opening the door for diminishing, undermining and eroding the power and jurisdiction of the apex court,` observed Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial in the judgement
4. Postage stamp issued to commemorate 75 years of US-Pakistan ties
The United States Mission to Pakistan culminated its year-long campaign, marking 75 years of relations with Pakistan, with a reception to honour the issuance of a commemorative stamp by Pakistan Post.
The event was held on Friday at the US ambassador`s residence which included Foreign Secretary Dr Asad Majeed Khan as chief guest and other prominent figures from Pakistani government, academia and civil society
5. KP governor accepts resignations of 14 ministers, 11 CM aides
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Ghulam Ali on Friday accepted the resignations of 14 provincial caretaker ministers and 11 aides to the chief ministers, including six special assistants and five advisers.
The administration department de-notified them all shortly thereafter.
The governor accepted the resignations of the caretaker cabinet`s members, according to two notifications issued by the administration department.
