February 11, 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. Senate passes resolution backing virus-hit China

• The Senate in its session on February 10, 2020 unanimously passed a resolution expressing solidarity with and support for China in combating the novel coronavirus, as a bill regarding torture, custodial death and custodial sexual violence was presented, and the increasing number of polio cases discussed.
• The resolution, read out by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Senator Mushahid Hussain, stated that the upper house acclaims the strong leadership of President Xi Jinping who is leading a very successful operation to combat the virus.
• `The Senate expresses its appreciation to the government of China for treating Pakistani citizens, especially students in Wuhan just like their own citizens, providing them with protection and comfort
• Pakistan`s Senate is the first parliament in the world to express such solidarity and support to China. The Senate resolution lauded the government and people of China for combating the epidemic with dedication, commitment and courage.


2. Child protection unit opens in Quetta

• The first child protection unit in Balochistan was opened in Quetta in collaboration with the United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) by provincial Minister for Social Welfare and Human Rights Mir Asadullah Baloch on February 10, 2020.
• Speaking at the event, the minister said the implementation of the Child Protection Act was aimed at bringing justice to children who are victims of sexual and physical abuse, deprivation and oppression.
• `The implementation of the Child Protection Act, which was passed in 2016, was due to the important roles played by the UNICEF and Social Welfare Department. But, the departments of health, education and labour, civil society and parents should also play their role,` he added.


3. Merger of Khasadars, Levies into police notified

• The home and tribal affairs department on February 10, 2020 notified the merger of 4,517 Khasadar and Levies personnel into the provincial police department.
• The merged Khasadar and Levies personnel include 2,441 in Bajaur district, 1,043 in Orakzai district, 618 in Darra Adamkhel and 425 in Bittani.
• Notifications were issued separately for each district in pursuance of the KP Khasadars Force Act, 2019, and with prior approval of the provincial cabinet and on the recommendations of the provincial police officer.


4. MoU signed for electronic data exchange with Iran

• Pakistan and Iran on February 10, 2020 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for electronic data exchange between the Customs authorities of the two countries on real time basis to control under and over-invoicing on goods.
• Pakistan Member Customs Javed Ghani and Iran`s Director General of Information Technology Department Haideh Bagheripour signed the MoU on behalf of their respective countries. Acting Chairperson Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Nausheen Javaid Amjad and Ambassador of Iran in Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Hosseini were also present on the occasion.
• The much-awaited MoU is the outcome of the Customs Mutual Assistance Agreement that was signed between the two countries on March 4, 2004. Before signing the MoU, the customs authorities of the two countries already held two rounds of meetings in 2019.


5. UN chief due in Pakistan on 16th

• United Nations Secretary General António Guterres will visit Pakistan next week to attend a refugee conference and for talks with Pakistani leaders on issues of mutual interests, a UN spokesman confirmed on February 10, 2020.
• Spokesman Farhan Haq said the secretary general will arrive in Pakistan on Sunday (Feb 16) and will meet Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. He will also have a separate meeting with President Arif Alvi.
• His talks in Pakistan will focus on `development and climate` issues, Mr Haq told reporters at a daily news briefing in New York.


6. Qasim set to become chief justice of LHC

• The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on February 10, 2020 recommended the elevation of senior puisne judge Justice Mohammad Qasim Khan as the next chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC).Presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed, the meeting was attended by Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Maqbool Bagar in addition to other members of the commission.
• When elevated, Justice Qasim Khan will replace CJ of LHC Mamoon Rashid Sheikhwho will reach superannuation on March 18, 2020.
• Justice Qasim Khan will serve as the chief justice of the high court until July 5, 2021


7. S. Korea`s Parasite becomes first non-English film to win best picture Oscar

• In a milestone win that instantly expanded the Oscars` horizons, Bong Joon Ho`s masterfully devious class satire Parasite became the first non-English language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards.
• Parasite took Hollywood`s top prize on Sunday night, along with awards for best director, best international film and best screenplay.
• In a year dominated by period epics 1917, Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood, The Irishman the film academy instead went overseas, to South Korea, to reward a contemporary and unsettling portrait of social inequality in Parasite.


8. Solar Orbiter launched on mission to probe Sun`s secrets

• The US-European Solar Orbiter probe launched on February 9, 2020 night from Florida on a voyage to deepen our understanding of the Sun and how it shapes the space weather that impacts technology back on Earth.
• The mission, a collaboration between ESA (the European Space Agency) and NASA, successfully blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral at 11:03pm and could last up to nine years or more.
• At 12:24am, the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, received a signal from the spacecraft indicating that its solar panels had successfully deployed


9. Clinical Pakistan take 85 minutes to complete BD rout

• Pakistan wrapped up proceedings of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on February 10, 2020, beating the visitors by an innings and 44 runs on the fourth day of the contest and ensuring an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two match series.
• This was Pakistan`s first victory at the venue in 23 years. The last time the home side won at Pindi was against the West Indies in 1997.
• Bangladesh, with four wickets in hand, needed 86 runs to avoid the eventual innings defeat at the start of the days` play, but the Pakistan attack had no plans to play for more than a session and it did the job in only 85 minutes of play


10. Ex-Test batsman Waqar Hasan passes away at 87

• Waqar Hasan, who was the last surviving member of the Pakistan side which played in the country`s inaugural Test against India in October 1952, died here on February 10, 2020 at the age of 87.
• Not keeping well for the past few years and being confined to bed, Waqar who was a stylish right handed batsman during his playing days, passed away peacefully at his home in Hill Park locality of the PECHS early in the morning, according to his family.
• A noted businessman, the late Waqar owned a leading food company which is being currently run by his only son Abrar
