1. Pakistan allows import of sugar, cotton from India

• In major development on Pakistan, India front, the federal government on March 31, 2021 announced to start sugar and cotton trade with India besides increasing wheat support price and reducing the prices of petrol and High Speed Diesel on fortnightly basis.
• “The first decision we have taken, after consultations with the prime minister, we will reduce the prices of petrol and diesel,” said Hammad Azhar in his maiden press conference, after assuming the charge of the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue.


2. 500,000 vaccine doses arrive Pakistan

• The government on March 31, 2021 received 500,000 doses of China-based novel coronavirus (COVID-19) CanSino vaccine.
• Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan received the vaccine at the Noor Khan air base here.
• The consignment of 500,000 doses of Sinopharm and 60,000 doses of Cancinobio vaccine reached Pakistan.


3. Nauman Aslam posted as DG NAB Multan

• The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has posted Nauman Aslam as Director General (DG) NAB Multan.
• Ahead of this appointment, Nauman Aslam was appointed as Director Human Resource at NAB Headquarters. The notification for appointment of Nauman Aslam with the approval of NAB Chairman.
• Nauman Aslam was also part of Panama Joint Investigation Team and forged accounts committee. He had also served as In-charge NAB in Gilgit-Baltistan. Nauman Aslam has also completed Grade-21 Course from National Defence University (NDU).
• The outgoing DG NAB Multan Attique-ur-Rehman has been posted DG A&R in NAB Headquarters


4. ECC approves Rs 5552m technical supplementary grants

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet March 31, 2021 approved Rs.5552.049 million Technical Supplementary Grants (TSG) for various ministries and divisions.
• The ECC, which was chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Hammad Azhar, has deferred the decision on Strategic Trade Policy Framework (STPF) 2020-25.
• However, it approved the formation of the NEDB as requested by the Ministry of Commerce to facilitate economic outreach initiatives.


5. UK court permits Broadsheet to serve freezing orders on NAB inside Pakistan

• The UK High Court of Justice has permitted Broadsheet LLC to serve freezing orders inside Pakistan on National Accountability Bureau (NAB) headquarters and Attorney General of Pakistan’s office in the Islamabad after bureau’s London lawyers failed to respond to court orders over several weeks.
• Broadsheet LLC had further approached the High Court of Justice – after securing a freezing order for nearly £1 million at the United Bank Limited London branch – pleading that NAB’s lawyers at the Allen & Ovary were not responding to their correspondence and the latest court orders which implies the Allen & Overy had gone off the record, and were no more instructed by NAB which also meant that the Pak government doesn’t currently have a legal representation in the ongoing litigation brought by Broadsheet LLC’s Kaveh Moussavi


6. Russia registers ‘world’s first’ Covid vaccine for animals

• Russia announced on March 31, 2021 it had registered what it said was the world’s first coronavirus vaccine for animals, describing the step as important for disrupting virus mutations.
• It said mass production of the vaccine could begin in April


7. WHO experts say Chinese jabs show ‘safety’, but data lacking

• WHO vaccine experts said March 31, 2021 that an interim analysis of clinical trial data from two Chinese Covid-19 vaccines showed they demonstrated “safety and good efficacy”, but that more data was needed.
• The Chinese firms Sinovac and Sinopharm, whose Covid jabs are already being used in several countries, have submitted data in applications for the World Health Organization’s emergency use listing (EUL) green light.
• The UN health agency’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) said it had reviewed the data provided so far, and that both vaccines “demonstrated safety and good efficacy against symptomatic Covid-19 disease”


8. Soldiers arrested in Niger after ‘attempted coup’

• Soldiers were arrested in Niger after an “attempted coup” early March 31, 2021, a security source said after gunfire broke out in the capital Niamey, adding “the situation is under control”.
• Residents reported hearing overnight bursts of gunfire near the presidency, just two days before Mohamed Bazoum is due to take the helm of the coup-prone country.
• “There were some arrests among a few members of the army who are behind this attempted coup,” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The Presidential Guard retaliated, preventing this group of soldiers from approaching the presidential palace,” said the source


9. Pakistan tennis legend Saeed Hai passes away

• Pakistan tennis legend Khawaja Saeed Hai, one of the early sports icons of the country, passed away here on March 31, 2021 aged 91.
• A former Pakistan No. 1, Hai was one of Pakistan’s biggest tennis stars of all time. He was the first Pakistani tennis player to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam through qualifying matches. He featured in the main draw of back-to-back editions of the Wimbledon in 1955 and 1956, and reached the second round of the French Open. He also played in the US Open.
• Apart from playing in the Davis Cup, he also captained Pakistan’s Davis Cup team 32 times


10. 93rd Academy Awards will have a ‘British hub’

• The 93rd Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, April 25 as an ‘in-person ceremony’ in Los Angeles with intense COVID-19 protocols in place, despite other award shows opting to go the ‘virtual’ route amid the pandemic.
• But show producers Steven Soderbergh, Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher, seemingly in response to travel concerns, informed nominees in a virtual meeting recently that a ‘British hub’ will be added for international wnominees.
• The Los Angeles hub will also include a traditional red carpet component, with producers ‘planning something special for the UK location.’
