1. Cabinet nixes ECC decision to allow imports from India

• A day after the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) allowed import of sugar, cotton and cotton yarn from India, the federal cabinet on April 1, 2021 deferred the decision citing reservations expressed by foreign and interior ministries that there should be no trade with India until it restored the semi-autonomous status of occupied Kashmir.
• Interestingly, the summary approved by the ECC regarding trade with India on Wednesday was duly signed by Prime Minister Imran Khan


2. PTA lifts ban on TikTok after PHC order

• In compliance with an order issued by the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on April 1, 2021, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) asked service providers to unblock access to social media platform TikTok that allows users to share short video clips.
• In line with the PHC judgement and provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, PTA also directed the TikTok`s management to ensure that vulgar and objectionable content is not made available to users in Pakistan


3. Islamabad, Kabul give three-month extension to transit trade agreement

• A protocol was signed here on April 1, 2021 to give a three-month extension to Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) 2010 to continue the facility for the landlocked country.
• Both countries have already exchanged drafts for the revision of the APTTA, which is yet to be finalised.
• Both sides expressed satisfaction over the extension of the agreement and decided that technical teams from the two countries would conclude the revised agreement soon


4. Searle, Chinese firm strike deal to make Covid vaccine in Pakistan

• A local pharmaceutical company has signed a deal with a Chinese giant that allowed it to supply and produce an upcoming Covid-19 vaccine in Pakistan, an official announcement said on April 1, 2021.
• This has emerged in a letter written by M/s Searle Company Limited to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, saying it had concluded an agreement with China`s Livzon Mapharm Inc. for manufacturing novel coronavirus vaccine (V-01)in Pakistan


5. Interest-free loan scheme launched for tribal districts

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has signed an agreement with Akhuwat Foundation to launch interest-free microfinance scheme for entrepreneurship development in the merged tribal districts.
• Under the scheme, small loans of up to Rs75,000 would be provided to entrepreneurs of the merged areas, according to an official statement issued here on Thursday. The scheme aimed at promoting small and medium enterprises and cottage industry would have revolving fund of Rs1 billion.
• Under the scheme, 25 per cent quota has been allocated for women, five per cent for special persons and two per cent for transgender people. The statement said that the agreement was signed with Akhuwat Foundation, a nonprofit private organisation, to launch the interest-free microfinance scheme.


6. Sindh cabinet approves Rs2bn scheme for interest-free small loans

• The Sindh government under a `pro-poor economic revival package` has decided to launch a Chief Minister Self employment Scheme to advance interest-free small loans to the people.
• This decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at CM House. The meeting was attended by all provincial ministers, advisers, chief secretary and relevant secretaries.
• The cabinet on the recommendation of the heritage committee approved a request of the owner of a building, Homie Katrak Chamber, Plot CL-9/22/7, Abdullah Haroon Road-Hoshang Road, for addition and alteration of the heritage building


7. Trade deficit balloons to $2.968bn in March

• Pakistan`s trade deficit has ballooned by 97.6 per cent in March, growing to $2.968 billion from $1.502bn over the corresponding month of last year, Ministry of Commerce data showed on April 1, 2021.
• On a month-on-month basis, the trade deficit grew by 17.77pc.
• The trade gap has been widening since Dec 2020. In February, it swelled by 23.93pc to $2.52bn as against $2.03bn over the corresponding month of last year


8. Russian foreign minister due next week

• Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will arrive here next week to hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi on the Afghan peace process.
• This will be the first visit of a Russian foreign minister to Pakistan since 2012.
• Before arriving in Islamabad on April 6, Mr Lavrov is scheduled to visit New Delhi. He will be accompanied by Russia`s special envoy on Afghanistan Zamir Kaboluv


9. Biden floats $2.3tr infrastructure plan to `win the future`

• President Joe Biden outlined a huge $2.3 trillion plan on March 31, 2021 to re-engineer the United States infrastructure in what he billed as a once-in-a-generation investment that would undo his predecessor`s signature legislative achievement giant tax cuts for corporations in the process.
• Speaking at a carpenters union training centre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Biden drew comparisons between his proposed transformation of the US economy and the space race and promised results as grand in scale as the New Deal or Great Society programmes that shaped the 20th century


10. US `looks forward to working with Pakistan` on climate crisis

• The US State Department said on April 1, 2021 that Washington looked forward to working with Islamabad on the climate crisis at different levels.
• The department announced earlier in the day that Special Presidential Envoy for climate John Kerry would travel to Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, and Dhaka from April 1 to 9 for consultations on the matter.
• The schedule, however, does not include Islamabad
