6. UN chief to meet Putin and Zelenskiy next week

• United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will visit Moscow next week to meet Russia`s President Vladimir Putin and then head to Ukraine for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
• Guterres will head to Moscow on Tuesday and meet Putin as well as having a working meeting and lunch with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Eri Kaneko, Guterres` associate spokesperson, told a news briefing in New York on Friday.
• Guterres has had little contact with Zelensky since the war began, speaking with him just once by telephone, on March 26. Putin has not taken Guterres` phone calls, or had any contact with him, since the UN chief stated that the invasion violated the UN charter.
• `He hopes to talk about what can be done to bring peace to Ukraine urgently,` Kaneko said.


7. Tehran, Riyadh reopen channels for talks

• Iran and Saudi Arabia have resumed key talks after negotiations were suspended last month, a senior Iraqi official told AFP on April 23, 2022.
• `Talks resumed last Thursday in Baghdad,` the official said, without giving further details.
• Iran`s Nour news agency confirmed a meeting attended by `senior officials from the secretariat of Iran`s Supreme National Security Council and the head of the Saudi intelligence service`.
• Shia-majority Iran and the Sunni kingdom of Saudi Arabia support rival sides in several conflict zones across the region, including in Yemen, where the Huthi rebels are backed by Tehran, and Riyadh leads a military coalition supporting the government


8. Ukraine to evacuate Mariupol as Moscow strikes Odessa

• Ukraine said it would make a fresh attempt on April 23, 2022 to evacuate civilians from Mariupol, the devastated port city largely controlled by Russian forces, as hopes for a weekend truce faded.
• Separately, a Russian strike in the Black Sea city of Odessa killed at least five people, including a baby, and wounded 18 others on Saturday, Kyiv said.
• The war enters its third month on Sunday with civilians continuing to pay a heavy price amid the ongoing fighting


9. After fresh attacks, Israel closes only crossing into Gaza

• Israel said it will close its only crossing from the Gaza Strip for workers on Sunday in response to overnight rocket fire, stopping short of conducting retaliatory strikes in an apparent bid to ease tensions.
• The rocket attacks on Friday night and Saturday morning followed days of clashes at Jerusalem`s flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound and a month of deadly violence.
• The unrest which comes as the Jewish festival of Passover overlaps with the month of Ramazan has sparked international fears of a wider conflict, one year after similar violence led to an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza-based militants

• Pakistan opener Shan Masood on Friday hit a second successive double century in the English county championship to take his aggregate to608 runs in four innings.
• The 32-year-old was out for 219, having hit 24 fours and a six as Derbyshire racked up 401 runs in the day to reach 437 for four and lead by 224 in their game against Leicestershire. Shan`s magnificent innings followed his 239 in last week`s draw against Sussex.
• Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson finally claimed Shan`s wicket on Friday, bowling him with a ball that turned sharply from outside the lefthander`s off stump.
