6. Russia invokes spectre of World War III
• Russia has warned of the `real` threat of World War III breaking out, ahead of a April 26, 2022 meeting between the United States and allies over sending further arms to war-torn Ukraine.
• Moscow`s invasion of its neighbour has triggered an outburst of support from Western nations that has seen weapons pour into the country to help it wage war against Russian troops.
• But Western powers have been reluctant to deepen their involvement, for fear of sparking a conflict against nuclear armed Russia.
• Speaking to Russian news agencies, Moscow`s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the risk of a World WarIII `is serious` and criticised Kyiv`s approach to floundering peace talks. `It is real, you can`t underestimate it, Lavrov said
7. Spain moves to make monarchy more transparent
• Spain`s leftist government and King Felipe VI have taken steps to boost the transparency of the monarchy, which has been tainted by financial scandals involving senior royals including his father, former monarch Juan Carlos.
• Under a decree passed on Tuesday by socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez`s government, the royal palace must publish its budget and make tenders public.
• The palace accounts must be audited by the supreme Court of Auditors, while senior palace officials will have to declare their personal wealth both when they take up their post and when they leave
8. UNGA adopts first-ever move to debate use of veto
• The UN General Assembly voted unanimously on April 26, 2022 to automatically meet within 10 days to debate the situation if any of the Security Council`s five permanent members vetoes a resolution.
• The UN charter gives China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States the power to veto Security Council resolutions, recognising their key roles in establishing the United Nations.
• Countries like Pakistan have often felt the need for a mechanism to deal with the arbitrary use of veto, but it was Russia`s veto to block a debate on the war in Ukraine that forced major powers into action. Russia used the veto soon after invading Ukraine in February and indicated that it would not hesitate to do it again to prevent future debates on the war
9. N. Korea vows to boost nuclear arsenal
• North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to speed up development of his country`s nuclear arsenal while overseeing a huge military parade that displayed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), state media reported on April 26, 2022.
• The parade took place on Monday night during celebrations for the 90th anniversary of North Korea`s armed forces, the state news agency KCNA said.
• Pyongyang has recently stepped up weapons tests and displays of military power as denuclearisation talks with the United States have stalled and a new conservative administration takes power in South Korea
10. Pakistan down Netherlands in high-scoring clash
• A hat-trick by Mohammad Rizwan and a goal each by Mubashir Ali and Ijaz led Pakistan to a 5-3 win over Netherlands in the first of their two match series against the hosts in Bred on Tuesday.
• Ijaz gave Pakistan early lead with a strike in the first quarter before the Netherlands responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead by halftime.
• The third quarter saw Pakistan equalise before regaining the lead and losing it again thanks to a leveller by the Netherlands. The visitors scored the winner in the dying minutes of the game.
