1. 12 US troops, 60 others die in blasts at Kabul airport

• Two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul`s airport on August 26, 2021, transforming a scene of desperad on into one of horror in the waning days of an airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover.
• The attacks killed at least 60 Afghans and 12 US troops, Afghan and US officials said.
• The US general overseeing the evacuation vowed the United States would go after the perpetrators of the bombings, and warned that more such attacks are expected.


2. Pakistan remains on UK red list for travel

• Despite weeks of lobbying by the Pakistan High Commission and British Pakistani MPs, the UK government`s travel review on August 26, 2021 showed no change for the country, which continues to remain on the red list.
• The UK government`s decision will come as a blow to travellers from Pakistan, who face a mandatory 10-day hotel quarantine that costs 2,250 pounds if they arrive in the UK.
• Labour MP for Manchester Gorton Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, Afzal Khan tweeted: `Completely disappointed by the government`s decision to keep Pakistan on the red list. With the crisis in Afghanistan underway, Pakistan can play a huge role in delivering key humanitarian aid. The decision will upset many and cause major disruption


3. Privatisation Commission auctions Lahore hotel for Rs1.951bn

• The Privatisation Commission on Thursday auctioned the Services International Hotel in Lahore at the highest bid of Rs1.951 billion against the reserved price of Rs1.949bn with the small difference between the two prices raising some eyebrows.
• Only two bidders participated in the auction and a renowned real estate developer of Lahore, Faisal Town Pvt Ltd, emerged successful, according to an official announcement.
• Federal Minister for Privatisation Mohammad mian Soomro, who chaired the process, termed the auction a success of the Privatisation Commission and said the government believed in merit and transparency in the auction of state-owned properties. He said that the auction had fetched more than the base price, adding that main purpose of the auction was to reduce the burden of debt retirement on the country


4. Pakistan joins 52 countries on Covid-19 research, development

• Pakistan has enrolled to participate in the `Solidarity PLUS` clinical trial led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that will evaluate three potential drugs artesunate, imatinib and infliximab for the treatment of Covid-19 infections aiming to protect people f rom severe hospitalisation and death because of the pandemic.
• WHO has announced that researchers and scientists from Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are joining thousands of researchers in 52 countries worldwide in the study, making up the largest global collaborationonCovid-19research and development.


5. 15 AJK ministers sworn in

• As many as 15 more ministers, including a female, were added to the one-member cabinet of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on August 26, 2021, three weeks after the swearing-in of Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan Niazi.
• The new ministers, all directly elected lawmakers from the AJK territory and two from the Pakistan based refugees, were sworn in by President Barrister Sultan Mahmood at a ceremony held in the President House.
• Prime Minister Niazi was also present on the occasion


6. Islamabad gets 3m doses of Pfizer vaccine donated by US

• Pakistan has received three million doses of coronavirus vaccine, Pfizer, donated by the United States under Covax facility, on a day when 85 more deaths and as many as 4,553 new cases of Covid-19 were reported from across the country.
• With national positivity rate of coronavirus being at 7.4 per cent, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Thursday urged the masses to get fully vaccinated so that herd immunity can be attained as the country has already administered over 50 million doses of vaccine. `For best protection against Covid, complete vaccination is a must. Get your second dose after 28 days (even if you don`t get message, just walk in to any nearest CVC and get your second dose), said the NCOC in a tweet


7. Over 210 killed in Ethiopia`s ethnic feud

• More than 210 people were killed over several days of ethnic violence in Ethiopia`s tense Oromia region last week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said on August 26, 2021.
• The state-affiliated but independent commission said witnesses described gunmen affiliated with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a rebel group, arriving on August 18 after security forces withdrew from Gida-Kirimu in the western region.
• `The area`s residents and others have told the commission more than 150 people were killed by the gunmen,` the human rights body said.


8. Ocean surface climates may disappear by 2100, says study

• Up to 95 percent of Earth`s ocean surface will have changed by the end of the century unless humanity reins in its carbon emissions, according to research published on August 26, 2021.
• Ocean surface climates, defined by surface water temperature, acidity and the concentration of the mineral aragonite which many marine animals use to form bones and shell support the vast majority of sea life.
• The world`s seas have absorbed around a third of all carbon pollution produced since the Industrial Revolution


9. Japan stops using 1.63m Moderna doses over fears of contamination

• Japan has decided to halt the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna`s Covid vaccine after reports of contamination in several vials, drug maker Takeda and the health ministry said on August 26, 2021.
• Takeda, which is in charge of sales and distribution of the Moderna shot in Japan, said it had `received reports from several vaccination centres that foreign substances have been found inside unopened vials`.
• `Upon consultation with the health ministry, we have decided to suspend the use of the vaccine` from three batches from Thursday, it added.


10. C. Asian states approach Russia for weapons after change in Kabul

• Russia said on August 26, 2021 it has received new orders for arms and helicopters from Central Asian republics bordering Afghanistan following the Taliban`s takeover of the country.
• The orders come as countries in the ex Soviet region, where Moscow holds military bases, have raised concerns over the militant group sweeping to power.
• `We are already working on a number of orders from countries in the region for the supply of Russian helicopters, fire arms and modern border protection systems, Alexander Mikheev, the head of Russia`s state arms exporter Rosobor on export, told the RIA Novosti news agency.
