• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has approved the climate change policy for the province along with an action plan containing 129 climate mitigation and 172 adaptation measures for 10 sectors.
• The action plan is to be carried out as priority and on short-, medium and long-term basis as envisaged under the KP Climate Change Policy, 2022.
• Officials told Dawn that a climate change policy was announced in 2017 but the need for a new policy was felt by the environment, forestry and wildlife department in the view of the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas with the province, glacial lake outburst floods as well as locust attacks in southern districts, and for the determination of new ecological zoning

• Gibraltar finally joined the official list of British cities on Monday, after 180 years in which its status, granted by Queen Victoria, had been overlooked due to an administrative error.

8. Russia curtails war games as Ukraine war begins to bite

• Russian military exercises in the Far East this week will take place on a far smaller scale than when they were last held in 2018, renecting the strain on Moscow`s forces as they struggle to make headway on the battlefields of eastern Ukraine.
• Announcing the `Vostok 2022` war games, in which China will also participate, the Russian defence ministry said last month that its capacity to stage such exercises was in no way affected by what Russia calls its `special military operation` in Ukraine.
• But the 50,000 personnel that Moscow said on Monday will take part are a fraction of the official figure of 300,000 that were said to be involved four years ago though some Western military analysts suspect that number was overstated

10. Ukraine prepares fresh offensive to `retake` southern region

• Ukraine on August 29, 2022 announced the start of a long-awaited counter-offensive to retake territory in the south seized by Russian forces since their invasion six months ago, a move reflecting Kyiv`s growing confidence as Western military aid flows in.
• The news came as a team from the UN nuclear watchdog headed to Ukraine to inspect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant captured by Russian forces in March but still run by Ukrainian staff that has become a hotspot in the war.
• Moscow and Kyiv have traded accusations of shelling in the vicinity of the nuclear plant, Europe`s largest and close to front lines, amid fears of a radiation disaster in a country still haunted by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster
