1. Asim Bajwa quits as PM picks CPEC aide

• In a significant development, Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 3, 2021 appointed Khalid Mansoor as his special assistant on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) affairs after which CPEC Authority Chairman retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa quit his position.
• The government believes that Mr Mansoor, having a vast experience of working as head of several organisations, would lead the second phase of the CPEC to be focused on industrial cooperation in a better way.
• After departure of Mr Bajwa, the post of CPEC Authority chairman has fallen vacant and it is expected that Mr Mansoor will be given an additional charge of this office in the days to come


2. Pakistan sets record, administers one million vaccines in a day

• Pakistan has finally achieved the milestone of one million shots a day as the country ramped up vaccination efforts in its struggle to tackle the resurgence of Covid19 cases.
• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on August 3, 2021 said half of the population of Islamabad and more than one fourth of Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Rawalpindi and a few other cities have been vaccinated.
• So far, 31,929,581 doses have been administered across the country, while 1,072,342 of them were administered in just one day, according to the NCOC


3. IMF approves $650bn to boost global economy

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the largest-ever distribution of monetary reserves of $650 billion to boost the global economy and help emerging and low-income nations deal with the mounting debt and Covid-19 crises.
• The IMF board of governors met in Washington on August 2, 2021 and approved this historic allocation, known as Special Drawing Rights (SDR). Pakistan, which has so far had 23 financial arrangements with the IMF, will also benefit from the boost.
• The general allocation of SDRs will become effective from Aug 23 this year


4. Anwar, Riaz elected speaker, deputy speaker of Azad Kashmir assembly

• Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq and Riaz Ahmed of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) were elected speaker and deputy speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) LegislativeAssembly, respectively, on August 3, 2021.
• They defeated Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Nisara Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) by securing 32 votes each as against 15 each of their opponents.
• Mr Rathore and Ms Abbasi were joint candidates of the two parties.
• Earlier, at the inaugural session, 49 out of 52 newly elected membersof the AJK Legislative Assembly were administered the oath of office by outgoing speaker Shah Ghulam Qadir


5. Reining in the bureaucracy Punjab Assembly passes amendment bill again, overriding governor`s objections

• The Punjab Assembly on August 3, 2021 again unanimously passed the Provincial Assembly (Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2021, overriding the objections raised by the governor to the piece of legislation earlier passed by the House on June 29.
• Treasury and opposition members jointly supported the move as Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi commented that `no bureaucrat should now dare to (sic) breach privilege of the House as the bill has (automatically) become a law`.
• Governor Muhammad Sarwar had sent back to the assembly the earlier bill for being in contravention to Article 66(3) and Article 10-A of the Constitution. The amendment law had added a schedule to the original 1972 Act, prescribing punishment to a bureaucrat for breach of privilege of the House, any of its committee or member and granting judicial powers to the speaker and/or the committee named by him or the House on the breach.


6. WB reallocates $150m to procure Covid-19 vaccines

• The World Bank on August 3, 2021 conveyed reallocation of $150 million funds to Pakistan for procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.
• `The WB is fully committed to providing assistance to developing countries for the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines and for the purpose $150 million has been reallocated for Pakistan,` said an official statement quoting World Bank`s South Asia Regional Vice President Hartwig Schafer.
• Mr Hartwig, along with WB`s Country Director for Pakistan Najy Benhassine, had separate meetings with Minister for Finance Shaukat Tarin and Minister for Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan on August 3, 2021.


7. Ultraconservative Raisi takes oath as Iran`s president

• Ultraconservative Ebrahim Raisi was inaugurated on August 3, 2021 as president of Iran, a country whose hopes of shaking off a dire economic crisis hinge on reviving a nuclear deal with world powers.
• `Following the people`s choice, I task the wise, indefatigable, experienced and popular Hojatoleslam Ebrahim Raisi as president of the Islamic Republic of Iran,` the country`s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wrote in a decree read out by his chief of staff.
• Raisi replaces moderate president Hassan Rouhani, whose landmark achievement was the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers.


8. Taliban seize much of Helmand capital; army advises evacuation

• The Taliban pressed ahead with their advances in southern Afghanistan on August 3, 2021, capturing nine out of 10 districts of the Helmand provincial capital, residents and officials said.
• Afghan government forces launched air strikes, backed by the US, in a desperate effort to defend the city of Lashkar Gah.
• The Afghan forces commander for Helmand, Gen Sami Sadat, in an audio message shared with journalists on Tuesday urged residents in neighbourhoods captured by the Taliban to evacuate immediately, though he did not clarify how they could do that amid the ongoing clashes. The message was an indication more air strikes were planned.


9. Iraq gets back looted ancient artefacts from US, others

• Over 17,000 looted ancient artefacts recovered from the United States and other countries were handed over to Iraq`s Culture Ministry on August 3, 2021, a restitution described by the government as the largest in the country`s history.
• The majority of the artefacts date back 4,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia and were recovered from the US in a recent trip by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
• Other pieces were also returned from Japan, Netherlands and Italy, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said in a joint press conference with Culture Minister Hasan Nadhim.


10. Pakistan win rain-ruined T20 series against West Indies

• Pakistan maintained their winning streak over the West Indies as rain had the final say yet again with the scheduled final encounter of the four-match Twenty20 International series abandoned as a no-result at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on August 3, 2021.
• Just one of the scheduled matches reached a conclusion on the field of play with the tourists defeating the home side by seven runs in the second match on Saturday at the same venue.
• Although play started on time in the final match, just three overs were bowled with the opening pair of Andre Fletcher and Chris Gayle getting the West Indies off to a flying start at 30 without loss
