1. Students below 18 travelling abroad allowed Moderna vaccine

• Students below the age of 18 who are intending to travel abroad have been allowed to get Moderna vaccine.
• On the other hand, former Senate chairman Mian Raza Rabbani condemned the United Kingdom`s decision to keep Pakistan on the Covid-19 red list and removing India and several other countries from it. In a tweet, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Friday said: `Vaccination is open to all above 18 years of age. However, students aged 16-18 years, who need to go abroad for study to universities requiring mandatory vaccination will be administered Moderna vaccine. (to be administered on checking valid visa / university documents).
• According to an NCOC official, students under 18 would have to follow the same registration process of sending an SMS on the helpline 1166, and wait for information about the health centre.

2. PAF fighter crashes near Attock

• A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter trainer aircraft crashed during a routine training mission near Attock on August 6, 2021.
• According to a PAF spokesman, the aircraft crashed near Fageerabad, Attock, due to some technical reasons. According to police sources, both the pilots ejected safely and no human or property loss was reported on the ground.
• The PAF spokesman said a board of inquiry had been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
• At least five similar incidents were reported last year, with four PAF jets crashing during training missions and one during rehearsing for the March 23 parade.

3. Taliban close Afghan border with Pakistan at Chaman

• The Taliban, who captured the Afghan district of Spin Boldak recently, closed the border with Pakistan at Chaman on August 6, 2021, suspending traffic as well as trade between the two countries that had been resumed only two weeks ago.
• Immediately after the Taliban seizure of the Afghan border district last month, Pakistan had closed its side of the crossing, landlocked Afghanistan`s second-busiest entry point and main commercial artery to the sea, before reopening it.
• On Thursday night the Taliban`s shadow governor for Kandahar province issued a statement that announced the closing down of the border with Pakistan at Chaman, and said Islamabad should relax rules for crossing the frontier

4. ADB okays $500m to help Pakistan procure Covid vaccines

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on August 6, 2021 approved and immediately signed a $500 million loan to help Pakistan procure and deploy safe and effective vaccines for coronavirus disease and strengthen the country`s capacity to implement its vaccination programme.
• The loan will support Pakistan`s National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (NDVP) through purchase and delivery of an estimated 39.8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, safety boxes and syringes, sufficient to vaccinate at least 18.1 million people from priority groups, the ADB said in a statement.
• Soon after the approval of the Covid-19 Vaccine Support Project under the Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility, the financing agreement was signed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MEA) Zulfiqar Haider and ADB`s Acting Country Director Cleo Kawawaki

5. India, China pull troops back from part of contested border

• India and China have pulled back troops from a flashpoint zone on their disputed border where they fought a deadly battle last year, the Indian government said on August 6, 2021..
• The world`s two most populous nations had poured tens of thousands of extra troops into the high-altitude and disputed Ladakh region after the clash last year.
• But the Indian Army said that following talks, rival troops in the Gogra area had moved back in a `phased, coordinated and verified manner` over the last two days

6. UN seeks funds to feed 6.2m people in Myanmar

• The United Nations said on August 7, 2021 it urgently needed funds to feed people in Myanmar amid fears that up to 6.2 million could be plunged into hunger by October.
• The UN`s World Food Programme said it was 70 per cent short of the $86 million needed over the next six months, as the country goes through multiple crises.
• A major wave of Covid-19 infections is surging through Myanmar, compounding hunger, rising food and fuel prices, political unrest, violence and displacement, the WFP said

7. Experts approve key UN report on climate change

• Representatives from 195 countries on Friday approved a critical UN science report that will provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment yet of the state of Earth`s climate.
• `Today, #IPCC`s latest #ClimateReport #ClimateChange 2021: the Physical Science Basis was approved and accepted in a historical first virtual approval session,` the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change tweeted on August 7, 2021.
• The report is set to be released on Monday

8. Taliban capture first provincial capital

• The Taliban on August 6, 2021 captured their first provincial capital since launching an offensive to coincide with the departure of foreign troops, a major blow to an Afghan government desperately trying to push back the insurgent s.
• `Zaranj, provincial capital of Nimroz, has fallen to the Taliban,` Roh Gul Khairzad, the deputy governor of Nimroz, said.
• She said the city in southwest Afghanistan near the Iranian border had been taken `without a fight`, and social media showed clips of insurgents roaming the streets, being cheered by residents.

9. UN envoy calls for SC action to avert catastrophe in Afghanistan

• The top UN official in Afghanistan appealed to the Security Council on August 6, 2021 to act now to avert a catastrophe in the war-torn country.
• Pakistan, while acknowledging the growing concern over Afghanistan, warned the world body not to allow India to `project a distorted picture` during its presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC). India called Friday`s special session to consider the situation in Afghanistan. India took over the council`s presidency this week for the month of August

10. Inaugural Kashmir Premier League starts in Muzaffarabad

• The inaugural Kashmir Premier League (KPL) Twenty20 tournament started amid fanfare at the picturesque Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium on August 6, 2021 night.
• The six-team event, which will continue till Aug 17, features Muzaffarabad Tigers, Rawalakot Hawks, Bagh Stallions, Mirpur Royals, Kotli Lions and Overseas Warriors. Overseas Warriors team will comprise Kashmiri players from overseas while the rest of the outfits will be representing different cities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
• Shahid Afridi`s Mirpur Royals were playing Shoaib Malik-led Rawalakot Hawks under lights in the event`s opening match at the Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium, which will host all the games, at the time of preparing this report
