1. Cabinet rejects audit report on Covid-19 spending

• The federal cabinet rejected the recently-released audit report which hinted at billions of rupees of irregularities in Covid-19 expenditure, vaccination process and Ehsaas relief programme.
• The cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan also asserted that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was bound to hold the next general elections on the basis of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in line with the recent legislation carried out by the parliament.
• The cabinet expressed its satisfaction over the `reduction` in prices of food items by 0.67 percent while media reported that according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), inflation had risen to over 11pc in November

2. Digital platform launched for farmers

• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that the fast evolving developments in technology is impacting economies around the world and digital interventions are needed in the agriculture sector to enhance productivity.
• He was speaking at a ceremony held here on Tuesday to launch Khushaal Watan platform designed to digitally help the rural community and farmers.
• The platform has been designed by Telenor Pakistan to digitally help the rural community and farmers and empower the agriculture ecosystem in the country

3. KP cabinet okays child protection bill after removal of controversial part

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet approved the draft Child Protection and Welfare (Amendment) Act, 2021, after removing a controversial clause for publicly releasing video recordings of the execution of the convicts of sexual assault against children.
• The cabinet met here with Chief Minister Mahmood Khan in the chair and ministers and administrative secretaries in attendance.
• Briefing reporters about the cabinet`s decisions, higher education minister Kamran Khan Bangash said the cabinet approved amendments to the proposed Child Protection and Welfare Act.

4. Samsung starts producing mobile phones in Pakistan

• One of the world`s largest manufacturers of mobile phones, Samsung, has finally started production in Pakistan, lifting hopes of the authorities and the industry that this would cut down the import bill of the country in the months to come.
• The development came to light on Tuesday at a meeting of the company`s top managers with the Senators who visited the production site in line with the plan to receive a briefing on the growing new sector and challenges ahead for the cellphones manufacturing industry in Pakistan.
• `We were informed that Samsung has formally started its production,` Faisal Subzwari, chairman of the Senate`s Standing Committee on Industries and Production, told Dawn.

5. MI6 spy chief terms China, Russia & Iran biggest threat for UK

• China, which is increasingly flexing its muscles around the world, is one of the biggest threats to Britain and its allies, and a miscalculation` by Beijing could lead to war, the head of the UK`s foreign intelligence agency said.
• MI6 chief Richard Moore said that China, Russia, Iran and international terrorism make up the big four security issues facing Britain`s spies in an unstable world where both countries and illicit organisations are racing to exploit fast-changing information technology.
• In his first public speech since becoming head of the Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, in October 2020, Moore said China is the intelligence agency`s single greatest priority as the country`s leadership increasingly backs bold and decisive action to further its interests

6. Fafen elects new chairperson

• The National Council of Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) has elected Ms Mossarat Qadeem as its new chairperson for a term of three years.
• Ms Mossarat Qadeem, who has replaced Mr Hameedullah Kakar, is a civil society figure and activist internationally known for her work on women empowerment and peace. She heads Paiman Alumni Trust.
• This is Ms Mossarat`s second term as Fafen`s chairperson.
• Elections for Fafen`s provincial, national and executive councils were held in November 2021. Fafen`s member regional networks had elected their conveners in September and October 2021.

7. US warns Russia against Ukraine `aggression`

• The United States warned Russia of `serious consequences` if it launches an invasion of Ukraine, as Nato ministers looked to counter a military build-up by Moscow on its neighbour`s border.
• The long-scheduled meeting of Nato top diplomats in Latvia`s capital Riga comes at a volatile moment along the bloc`s eastern flank as allies also grapple with a migrant crisis the West says is fuelled by Kremlin-backed Belarus.
• Western countries spearheaded by the US worry that Moscow could be planning an incursion into Ukraine after accusing the Kremlin of massing tens of thousands of troops and heavy armour close to the frontier.

8. After first woman PM, Sweden gets its first trans minister

• Sweden`s new Schools Minister Lina Axelsson Kihlblom became the first transgender person to become a government minister in the Nordic country, a year after the appointment of Europe`s first transgender minister.
• The 51-year-old former school principal and lawyer was added to the Social Democratic government by Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, who also became the first woman to hold that post.
• In her 2015 book `Will You Love Me Now?`, Axelsson Kihlblom described growing up as a girlin a boy`s body and her physical transition to a woman`s body, which was completed when she was 25

9. Abid misses second ton but leads Pakistan to eight-wicket win over Bangladesh

• Opener Abid Ali missed out on back-to-back centuries by nine runs but Pakistan comfortably chased down a 202-run target to beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in first Test in Chittagong.
• Abid and Abdullah Shafique put on a 151-run partnership for the first wicket, their second consecutive 100-plus stand in the match to give Pakistan`s chase a powerful start and help bring play to an end before lunch on the final day.
• The duo had already made 109 overnight.
• Bangladesh had to wait until the 10th over of the day for their first success when Mehidy Hasan trapped debutant Abdullah lbw on 73 with a fuller delivery

10. Messi claims record-extending seventh Ballon d`Or

• Lionel Messi won the men`s Ballon d`Or for a record stretching seventh time, ending the year in style after a brilliant final season with Barcelona and earning his first major international trophy with Argentina.
• The forward added to his 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019 trophies after winning the Copa America for the first time with his country last July.
• Now 34, Messi pipped much fancied rivals like Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema to take the award in a glittering ceremony in Paris, the city he now calls home after leaving boyhood club Barca for Paris St Germain in August
