6. Letter bomb wave targets Spanish PM, US embassy

• Spanish police were investigating on December 1, 2022 a series of letter bombs sent to targets including the prime minister and the US embassy, similar to one which went off at the Ukrainian embassy, hurting a staff member.
• The interior ministry revealed that an envelope with `pyrotechnic material` had arrived at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez`s official residence on Nov 24. It was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
• Spain`s High court meanwhile announced it had broadened an initial investigation over the Ukraine embassy letter bomb to cover the all the other incidents


7. UN launches record $51.5bn emergency funding appeal

• The UN appealed for record funds for aid next year, as the Ukraine war and other conflicts, climate emergencies and the still-simmering pandemic push more people into crisis, and some towards famine.
• The United Nations` annual Global Humanitarian Overview estimated that 339 million people worldwide will need some form of emergency assistance next year a staggering 65 million more people than the estimate a year ago.
• `It`s a phenomenal number and it`s a depressing number,` UN aid chief Martin Griffiths told reporters in Geneva, adding that it meant `next year is going to be the biggest humanitarian programme` the world has ever seen

8. Indian SC to hear Bilkis rape case again

• Gujarat`s gang-rape victim Bilkis Bano challenged the recent remission of sentence and release of convicts in the 2002 case of brutal assault and the murder of her family, and the Supreme Court said it would consider listing the matter for hearing.
• A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the submissions of lawyer Shobha Gupta that the victim herself has challenged the grant of remission and release of the convicts, and the matter be listed for hearing.
• She said that Justice Ajay Rastogi, who was part of the bench which had heard other similar pleas against the remission, was now part of a Constitution Bench hearing.

9. Germany crash out as Japan, Spain advance

• It was a nerve wracking climax to Group `E` on December 1, 2022 night, with Spain going through despite losing to Japan, and Germany crashing out despite a 4-2 victory against Costa Rica.

But Germany, who had opened the scoring through Serge Gnabry`s 10th-minute header, levelled matters immediately through Kai Havertz.


10. `Bazball` continues as England smash record-breaking 506-4 on first day

• In a superb display of belligerent batting, England amassed a record first-day score of 506-4 in the first Test against Pakistan here at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on December 1, 2022.
• Four England players made quickfire hundreds the first time four batters scored centuries on day one of a Test-in what remained a forgettable day for home bowlers who toiled on an unresponsive pitch.
• It was also the first time four batters scored hundreds on day one of a Test match.
• Openers Zak Crawley (122) and Ben Duckett (107) set the tone with brisk centuries against a toothless Pakistan bowling attack which included three debutants pacers Haris Rauf and Mohammad Ali, and leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood before Ollie Pope (108) and Harry Brook (101 not out) added to the hosts` misery in front of around 6,000 spectators including some English supporters. Captain Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 34 when bad light stopped play, as England broke the century-old record for the most runs on the opening day of a Test, surpassing Australia`s 494-6 against South Africa at Sydney way back in December 1910
