6. TV, film actor Afzaal Ahmad passes away

• Renowned TV and film star Syed Afzaal Ahmad, popularly known as Afzaal Chitta, passed away in Lahore on December 2, 2022 after a protracted illness. He was 82.
• Ahmad had suffered a brain heamorrhagein November 2001 after which his life never remained the same, leaving him with a speech impairment. On Thursday, his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to a hospital where he breathed his last on December 2, 2022. Ahmad is survived by his wife and three daughters.
• His funeral prayers will be held at his Raiwind Road residence on Saturday (today) after some relatives fly in from aboard.
• Afzaal Ahmad started his career with radio plays where he was discovered by celebrated writer Ashfaq Ahmad something he also mentioned in an interview to PTV years ago.

7. US keeps Pakistan on religious violators list

• The United States on December 2, 2022 placed Pakistan on a list of countries that `engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom` during 2022.
• `Around the world, governments and non state actors harass, threaten, jail, and even kill individuals on account of their beliefs, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken while announcing the designations.
• `In some instances, they stifle individuals` freedom of religion or belief to exploit opportunities for political gain.
• Noting that such actions sow division, undermine economic security, and threaten political stability and peace, the top US diplomat said his country `will not stand by in the face of these abuses`

8. US designates four TTP, AQIS leaders as global terrorists

• The United States has declared four Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (T TP) and South Asian Al Qaeda leaders as global terrorists and vowed to use its full might against all Afghanistan-based terror groups.
• `The United States is committed to using its full set of counterterrorism tools to counter the threat posed by terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, the US State Department said on Thursday evening.
• The announcement identified `Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)` as the two groups that were using the Afghan soil for spreading terror in the region


9. Putin rejects Biden`s terms for talks, says strikes on Ukraine `inevitable`

• Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 2, 2022 strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure were `inevitable` as the Kremlin rejected US President Joe Biden`s terms for talks and warned the assault would continue.
• After suffering military defeats during what has become the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, Russia began targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure in October, causing sweeping blackouts.
• Speaking with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the first time since mid-September, Putin slammed what he called the West`s `destructive` policies in Ukraine and said Russian strikes were a response to `provocative` attacks from Kyiv

10. Victorious Cameroon fail to qualify

• Vincent Aboubakar scored with a stunning header before he was sent off as Cameroon grabbed a famous 1-0 win over Brazil on Friday night but wasn`t enough to prolong their jour-ney at the World Cup in Qatar after Switzerland edged Serbia 3-2 to grab second spot behind the Brazilians.
• Aboubakar got on the end of a terrific cross from Karl Toko Ekambi in stoppage time and powered a header past Ederson. But having already been cautioned, he took his shirt off to celebrate and was given another yellow card at the Lusail Stadium.
• Brazil, who had nothing to show for their dominance, finished top of Group `H`, level on points with the Swiss but with a better goal difference as the result in the other game sent Cameroon packing despite their smash-and-grab win.
