6. Three killed in blasts at two Russian airbases

• Russia rained long-range missiles on Ukraine on December 5, 2022, killing two people, destroying homes in the southeast and causing power outages, but Kyiv said its air defences had limited the damage.
• Air raid sirens blared across the country and men, women and children huddled in the capital`s cavernous metro system to take cover during the latest big wave of missile strikes since its Feb 24 invasion of Ukraine.
• Moscow has been targeting Ukraine`s power grid in intense waves of attacks since October, and state energy company Ukrenergo, which operates the national power grid, said more infrastructure had been hit on Monday Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal later said energy facilities had been hit in the regions of Kyiv, Vinnytsia in west-central Ukraine and Odesa in the south, but that Ukraine`s energy system was still functioning

7. Construction begins on world`s biggest telescope

• Australia on December 5, 2022 started building a vast network of antennas in the Outback, its section of what planners say will eventually become one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world.
• When complete, the antennas in Australia and a network of dishes in South Africa will form the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a massive instrument that will aim to untangle mysteries about the creation of stars, galaxies and extraterrestrial life.
• The idea for the telescope was first conceived in the early 1990s, but the project was plagued by delays, funding issues and diplomatic jockeying.
• The SKA Observatory`s Director General Philip Diamond described the beginning of its construction as `momentous`

• Pakistan became the latest victims of `Bazball` when they failed to chase down a fairly achievable target on a placid pitch, giving England `one of their greatest away wins` on the final day of the first Test here at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on December 5, 2022.
• Cruising towards a win by tea, Pakistan were subjected to a reverse swing masterclass by pacers James Anderson and Ollie Robinson leaving them desperately trying to save the match as the daylight f aded an hour later.

• World Cup favourites Brazil produced a performance to delight fans and terrify potential opponents on December 5, 2022 as they ripped through South Korea with four first-half goals to secure a hugely impressive 4-1 victory in their last 16 clash.
• They were ahead after seven minutes when Raphinha`s low cross reached Vinicius Jr and he expertly lifted the ball above the charging goalkeeper and three defenders.
• Five minutes later it was 2-0 with a Neymar penalty and Richarlison added a brilliant third after a spell of juggling then a razor combination with Marquinhos and Thiago Silva that had Brazil`s delirious fans dancing and neutrals everywhere purring


10. Livakovic the hero as Croatia down Japan in shootout to reach quarters

• Mario Pasalic was cool, calm and collected from the spot. This, the eighth penalty of the shootout, was his chance to send Croatia through to the quarter-finals.
• Standing on the centre circle, he`d seen his team-mate Marko Livaja strike the post with the previous penalty. Pasalic, though, didn`t flinch. As Japan`s Shuichi Gonda dived to his right, Livaja slotted it to the left and leapt into an embrace with Dominik Livakovic, the Croat goalkeeper who had denied three Japanese players from 12 yards.
