6. NADRA receives certification for `robust` data security

• The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has secured an `ISO 27001` certification for its `robust cyber resilience and effective measures to secure data,` a press release by the authority has said.
• ISO 27001 is an internationally recognised standard for information security management systems.
• It is awarded to organisations with resilient and effective systems in place to secure critical data such as financial information, intellectual property and employee data.
• Nadra is now an ISO:27001 certified entity in ID card printing, networks and communications, infrastructure and information security departments, according to the press release. The authority has recently received the certification in recognition of its `exceptional commitment` to protecting and safeguarding information assets, the press release added


7. ECNEC okays Rs333.6bn for flood-hit projects

• The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on December 6, 2022 approved about Rs333.6 billion worth of 10 development projects for flood-related recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction across the country.
• Most projects, worth Rs233bn of the total, related to Sindh, which took the brunt of the flood-related damage.
• The ECNEC meeting, presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, was attended by federal ministers for planning, communications and commerce, prime minister`s special assistants on finance and revenue, provincial finance ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Senator Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on behalf of Sindh government.
• The meeting approved the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the National Highway 5 (N-5) from Moro to Ranipur (around 90 kilometres) and 32 damaged bridges at a total cost of Rs36.2bn $164.6 million under the Asian Development Bank`s (ADB) flood emergency loan to the extent of 90pc project cost and 10pc Pakistan government`s share.

8. UNICEF seeks $10bn to help 110m children in 155 states

• The United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) has launched a $10.3 billion emergency funding appeal to reach more than 173 million people, including 110 million children, affected by Covid19 pandemic worldwide and the growing threat of climate-impacted severe weather events.
• Funds will support essential programmes for over 110 million children across 155 countries and territories through 2023, according to a UNICEF press statement released on December 6, 2022.
• Around the world, a resurgence of disease outbreaks, including cholera and measles, bring an additional danger to children in emergencies, said the statement

9. Indonesia bans sex outside marriage in criminal code

• Indonesia`s parliament approved a new criminal code on December 6, 2022 that bans sex outside marriage with a punishment of up to one year in jail, despite worries the laws may scare away tourists from its tropic al shores and harm investment.
• The new code, which will apply to Indonesians and foreigners alike, also prohibit cohabitation between unmarried couples. It will also ban insulting the president or state institutions, spreading views counter to the state ideology, and staging protests without notification. The laws were passed with support from all political parties.
• However, the code will not come into effect for three years to allow for implementing regulations to be drafted. Currently, Indonesia bans adultery but not premarital sex

10. Google launches anti-misinformation campaign in India

• Google`s Jigsaw subsidiary is launching a new anti-misinformation project in India, aimed at preventing misleading information that has been blamed for inciting violence, a top executive said.
• The initiative will use `pre bunking` videos designed to counter false claims before they become widespread circulated on the company`s YouTube platform and other social media sites.
• Google`s efforts to challenge the spread of misinformation mark a contrast with rival Twitter which is cutting its trust and safety teams, despite new owner Elon Musk saying it will not become a `free-for-all hell scape`
