1. TTP used `peace talks` to swell its ranks: NACTA

• A document prepared by the National Counter-Terrorism Authority (NACTA) presented to the Senate Standing Committee on Interior blamed the `peace talks` with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for an increase in terror attacks across the country.
• The Senate panel was informed that the dialogue initiated with the banned outfit by the government of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) `emboldened` the Taliban which increased their `footprint and magnitude of activities` during the corresponding period.
• `TTP, during peace talks process gained considerable ground; increased its footprint and magnitude of activities,` the Nacta document said. It added the withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan `gave impetus to TTP activities with its base [still] intact in Afghanistan`


2. SBP`s forex reserves fall to near four-year low

• The foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) plunged $784 million to a nearly four-year low of $6.72 billion during the week that ended on Dec 2, the central bank said on December 8, 2022.
• According to the central bank data, the SBP reserves were last recorded below this level during the week ended on Jan18, 2019, when it had some $6.64bn.
• Net foreign reserves held by commercial banks now stand at $5.867bn, meaning the country`s total liquid foreign reserves are now $12.58bn.
• Strengthening the foreign exchange reserves remained the top agenda of the new government since it took the helm in April. However, SBP`s reserves have since dropped by more than $4bn from around $10.9bn at the time

3. Rs205bn flood response plan unveiled

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on December 8, 2022 announced the Rs205 billion Flood Response Plan saying it will reconstruct the areas badly hit by the recent flooding and develop climate-resilient infrastructure in the province.
• The plan designed by the planning and development department with the support of the United States Agency for International Development and the United Nations Development Programme`s Merged Areas Governance Project focuses on two components, including short-term rehabilitation and long term adaptation and mitigation requirements to pave the way for a more sustainable climate response strategy in the province, according to an official statement.
• Finance and health minister Taimur Khan Jhagra said the world was entering uncharted waters with climate change

4. E-stamp papers launched

• Additional Deputy Commissioner Sohail Ahmad said on December 8, 2022 that the e-stamp paper system would bring transparency in land and property dealings and eliminate forgery and fraud.
• After inaugurating e-stamp papers in the district, he said that launching the system was part of the provincial government`s initiative of e-governance.
• Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Latif, officials of National Bank and revenue were also present on occasion.
• He said that in the past various tactics were used for illegal activities through the stamp papers


5. Japan announces $3.9m grant for polio eradication

• The Japanese government has announced a grant of over $3.87 million for the polio eradication programme in Pakistan and procurement of essential oral polio vaccine to reach more than 18.61 million children under five years of age living in endemic and outbreak districts.
• The notes of the grant were signed and exchanged between the Japanese government and the UN Children`s Fund (Unicef) and between Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and Unicef in Islamabad on Thursday. Minister for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Abdul Qadir Patel was present during the signing ceremony.
• Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patel said Pakistan had come a long way over the last 30 years, and from thousands of children paralysed by poliovirus in the 1980s and 1990s, `we have managed to reduce the number of cases and affected communities drastically`
