6. SECP gets three new commissioners

• With the appointment of the three commissioners in the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) on December 13, 2022, the chairperson remains the only member of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP).
• The finance ministry has notified Akif Saeed, Abdul Rehman Warraich and Mujtaba Ahmad Lodhi as commissioners in SECP for three years bringing its strength to five.
• However, Mr Lodhi is currently one of the two members of the CCP along with chairperson Rahat Kaunain Hassan.
• As Mr Lodhi leaves to join the SECP, the only member remaining in CCP is Ms Hassan, whereas under the law there have to be a minimum of five and a maximum of seven members in the CCP

7. Jamaat chief arrested in Bangladesh

• Bangladeshi police arrested the chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, the country`s largest Islamist party, on December 13, 2022, days after it announced it would join the main opposition in protests to oust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
• Counter-terrorism officers arrested Shafiqur Rahman, the Jamaat`s emir, in Dhaka, a police spokesman said, without elaborating on the charges.
• The party has been banned from contesting elections since 2012.
• A spokesman for Jamaat, the country`s third-largest political party, condemned the 64-year-old`s arrest, saying it was intended to `scuttle the opposition`s anti-government movement`


8. Rich nations oppose biodiversity fund

• Creating a new global fund for biodiversity a core demand of developing countries at UN talks in Montreal `would take years` and be less effective than reforming existing financial mechanisms, Canada`s environment minister said on December 13, 2022.
• Ottawa`s position reflects the consensus among developed nations on the thorny issue, which has emerged as a key sticking point in negotiations to hammer out a new global pact for nature at the meeting.
• Delegates from across the world have gathered for the summit to try to secure a new deal: a 10-year framework aimed at saving forests, oceans and species

9. Ukraine`s allies pledge over $1bn in winter aid

• Some 70 countries and institutions worldwide pledged more than one billion euros ($1.05bn) in immediate aid to help Ukraine get through a harsh winter as Russian forces batter its energy grid and other critical civilian infrastructure.
• France hosted the global meeting to discuss what could be offered between now and March to maintain water, food, energy, health and transport during Ukraine`s typically frigid winter.
• French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said out of the $1bn pledged, some 415 million were devoted to Ukraine`s energy sector, hammered by Russian air strikes, adding that the participation of non-Western countries such as Qatar and Cambodia showed a widening of support for Ukraine


10. Scientists claim advance in quest for fusion energy

• Scientists announced a breakthrough in fusion energy on December 13, 2022, potentially a step toward one day harnessing the process that fires the sun to generate carbon-free electricity as the world struggles with climate change.
• The US Energy Department said on Tuesday that scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California, which focuses on national security and nuclear weapons, for the first time had briefly achieved a net energy gain in a fusion experiment using lasers.
• Nuclear scientists outside the lab said it seemed like the achievement would be a major stepping stone in the decades-long effort to harness fusion
