6. ADB approves $775m for flood-hit provinces

• Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on December 15, 2022 signed $775 million worth of five financing agreements to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in the flood-affected areas of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.
• These projects will support the reconstruction and rehabilitation of irrigation and drainage structures, flood risk, and on-farm water management, as well as improve power and transport infrastructure in the flood-affected provinces. The signed agreements also include a project to improve access to quality employment for skilled workers in Punjab.
• The agreements were signed by Secretary Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Dr Kazim Niaz and ADB Deputy Country Director Asad Aleem


7. Govt, Barrick Gold sign final accord on Reko Diq

• The federal and Balochistan governments signed an agreement on Reko Dig with the Canadian company Barrick Gold on December 15, 2022, days after the Supreme Court endorsed a settlement to resume mining at the site located in Chagai district.
• The agreement will take effect on Dec 16 (today) and the company will start work on the project with immediate effect.
• In a statement issued late on Thursday night, the Balochistan government termed the agreement historic and the country`s biggest investment accord

8. EU parliament recognises Ukraine`s Soviet-era famine as `genocide`

• The European Parliament on December 15, 2022 approved a resolution declaring the 1930s starvation of millions in Ukraine under Soviet leader Joseph Stalin a `genocide` The text said the EU legislature `recognises the Holodomor, the artificial famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine caused by a deliberate policy of the Soviet regime, as a genocide against the Ukrainian people`.
• The step comes days after Ukraine marked 90 years since the famine and as Russian forces wage a devastating war against the country. Kyiv has urged the international community to officially declare the starvation `genocide` as Ukraine confronts Moscow`s modern-day aggression


9. Peace accord with S. Arabia will lead to resolution of conflict with Palestinians, says Netanyahu

• A Peace agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel would lead to a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Jewish state`s prime minister designate Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with Al Arabiya, a Saudi daily, on Wednesday.
• Netanyahu suggested that extending the progress made in the 2020 Abraham Accords a peace initiative between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain to other Arab states would be a more effective route to peace than engaging with Palestinian leaders directly, who he alleged, were not willing to recognise Israel.
• `I think peace with Saudi Arabia will serve two purposes: It will be a quantum leap for an overall peace between Israel and the Arab world, it will change our region in ways that are unimaginable,` he said. `And I think it will facilitate, ultimately, a Palestinian-Israeli peace. I believe in that. I intend to pursue it.


10. Taliban admin, Myanmar junta not allowed into UN

• A decision on whether the Afghan Taliban administration and the Myanmar junta can send a United Nations ambassador to New York has been postponed for a second time, but could be reconsidered in the next nine months, according to a UN credentials committee report.
• The 193-member UN General Assembly is on Friday due to approve the report, which also deferred a decision on rival claims to Libya`s UN seat. The nine-member UN credentials committee includes Russia, China and the United States.
• The deferment of the decisions leaves the current envoys in the seats for their countries, diplomats said.
