1. Let`s engage at opportune time, Pakistan tells US

• Pakistan conveyed to the United States on December 8, 2021 that it would like to engage with Washington on the issue of democracy `at an opportune time in the future`, indicating that it may not attend President Joe Biden`s Democracy Summit.
• More than 100 nations, including Pakistan, have been invited to the two-day virtual summit, which begins on Thursday (today). Pakistan is still on the list but the official schedule of speakers does not mention Pakistan.
• The only speaker from Pakistan is human rights activist Hina Jilani who will address a panel on elections and rule of law.


2. Imran unveils Naya Pakistan Card initiative

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on December 8, 2021 formally launched the Naya Pakistan Card initiative, bringing mega welfare programmes of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government covering health, education, food and agriculture sectors under one umbrella.
• With the launch of Naya Pakistan Card, which covers Ehsaas Ration Programme based on a food subsidy pack-age for low-income families, Kisan Card, Sehat Card and scholarships for students, beneficiaries of various initiatives can avail all services on the same card.
• Addressing the ceremony held at the Governor House, Prime Minister Khan said that Kamyab Pakistan scheme was also in the pipeline under which two million eligible families would receive Rs400,000 interest-free loans for self employment, free technical education to one member of each registered family, Rs2.7 million loan for house construction and free health insurance


3. PN conducts live firing of surface-to-air missiles

• Pakistan Navy conducted successful live weapons firing during a ceremony on December 8, 2021.
• The units of Pakistan Navy demonstrated combat readiness and war fighting potential through Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) live firing of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) at Karachi.
• The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Mohammed Amjad Khan Niazi, was chief guest on the occasion.
• He was briefed on Pakistan Navy`s operational capabilities and ongoing developments to augment security through the induction of SAMs.


4. India`s defence chief among 13 killed in air crash

• Indian defence chief Gen Bipin Rawat was among 13 people killed in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021, raising questions over the future of military reforms he was leading.
• Rawat was India`s first chief of defence staff, a position that the government established in 2019, and was seen as close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
• The 63-year-old general was travelling with his wife and senior officers in the Russian-made Mi-17 chopper, which crashed near its destination in southern Tamil Nadu state. Modi said Rawat was an outstanding soldier and `true patriot` who had helped modernise the country`s armed forces.
• `His passing away has saddened me deeply,` he wrote on Twitter


5. Notification of increase in PAS officers in provinces suspended

• The Lahore High Court on December 8, 2021 suspended the operation of a federal government notification that increased Centre`s share in the provincial bureaucracy.
• Justice Sajid Mahmood Sethi stayed the notification hearing a petition challenging the existence of the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) and posting of its members in the provinces.
• Several officers of the Punjab Provincial Management Service (PMS) filed the petition through Advocate Bilal Hasan Minto.


6. Cricket, cricketers most googled in Pakistan

• Cricket, Shoaib Malik and Squid Game remained the top searches on Google in Pakistan in 2021.
• The search engine has released its lists of the top trending searches that saw a consistent spike in traffic in Pakistan over a sustained period during 2021 as compared to 2020. The lists cover a wide array of categories from sports, movies and dramas to animated films, providing an insight into the unique trends in the country as compared to the past year.
• However, this year, it seems cricket fever swept the nation and dominated the Google search results in the country.
• The top searches in 2021 were related to Pakistan`s cricket series with South Africa and England followed by highlights of the games in ICC T20 World Cup and the Pakistan Super League.


7. Samar Minallah bags another award for short film

• Pakistani filmmaker and anthropologist Samar Minallah won an international award for her short film Out Swing which was declared the best short film at the 7th Sport Film Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
• The win was announced on Twitter where the film creator was lauded for her work.
• After the announcement of the winner of the 7th Sport Film Festival, Ms Minallah received many congratulations on social media across the globe.


8. Germany gets new chancellor after 16 years of Merkel

• Social Democrat Olaf Scholz was sworn in as German chancellor on December 8, 2021, ending Angela Merkel`s 16 years of conservative rule and paving the way for his coalition government that has promised to boost green investment and strengthen European unity.
• Scholz, 63, who over the past four years served as vice chancellor and finance minister in coalition with Merkel, won a majority of 395 votes from lawmakers in the lower house ofparliament, Bundestag President Baerbel Bas said.
• After being formally nominated by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the nearby Bellevue Palace, Scholz returned to the historic Reichstag building in the heart of the German capital to take the oath of office in front of lawmakers and become Germany`s ninth chancellor since the end of World War Two


9. Russian rocket carrying Japanese billionaire docks with ISS

• A Russian rocket carrying a Japanese billionaire docked with the International Space Station on December 8, 2021, marking the country`s return to space tourism after a decade-long pause that saw the rise of competition from the United States.
• Online fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa and his assistant Yozo Hirano blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan earlier on December 8, 2021.
• They docked with the Poisk module of the Russian segment of the ISS at 1340 GMT, the Russian space agency said. `We have , contact,` Roscosmos tweeted.


10. Sajid leads Pakistan to BD series sweep in race against dying light

• Off-spinner Sajid Khan claimed 4-86 and finished with a match haul of 12 wickets as Pakistan defied fading light and broke Bangladesh`s stubborn resistance to secure an innings and eight-run victory and take the two-Test series 2-0 in Dhaka on December 8, 2021.
• Bangladesh were forced to follow-on after being wrapped up for 87 in the first innings their lowest score on home soil and were bowled out for 205 as Pakistan bowlers claimed 13 wickets on a frenetic final day of the rain-hit second Test at Mirpur`s Sher-e Bangla Stadium.
• With the light gradually fading, Bangladesh`s last-wicket pair of Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain resisted for 34 balls to raise a hope of salvaging the Test
