1. FBR releases Rs30 billion refunds to 554 exporters

• The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on December 5, 2019 released cash amount of Rs30 billion refunds to total 554 exporters after cancellation of issued bonds.
• The government had issued bonds of worth Rs30 billion to exporters a few months back but the exporters were facing difficulties because these bonds were not tradable, causing problems for exporters. The exporters had demanded of the government to cancel the bonds and provide them cash amount of Rs30 billion. The FBR high-ups confirmed that the cash amount was released on Thursday to hundreds of exporters that will help them overcome their liquidity crunch.
• “Yes, we have made cash payment of total refund amount of Rs30 billion to 554 persons,” the FBR’s Member Inland Revenue Policy Dr Hamid Ateeq Sarwar confirmed. The FBR also announced that it has disbursed payment to exporters/bond holders by redeeming bonds issued to the refund claimants


2. IGP Punjab inaugurates first police TV web channel

• IG Punjab Shoaib Dastgir December 5, 2019 visited Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) Headquarters at Qurban Lines. He chaired a session on performance of the authority after inauguration of first police TV web channel in Pakistan.
• Shoaib Dastgir said the web TV channel will propagate information and awareness about traffic laws, situation of law and order and programmes of general policing which will be instrumental in strengthening coordination between public and police.
• It will also give an opportunity to display unprecedented sacrifices and exemplary talent of police heroes. By this web channel good work of police will be propagated and also actions against criminals will be shown so that the image of police as department may be enhanced and its prestige may be restored quickly.


3. Pakistan, Australia sign water plan

• The Ministry of Water Resources on December 5, 2019 signed the annual activity plan for cooperation in the field of water resources management with the government of Australia.
• This annual activity plan is an instrument to implement the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on water cooperation signed between the two countries in September 2018.
• Ministry of Water Resources Secretary Muhammad Ashraf signed this document on behalf of government of Pakistan, whereas Australian High Commissioner for Pakistan Dr Geoffrey Shaw signed on behalf of the government of Australia.


4. Moody’s upgrades ratings for 5 Pakistani banks to stable

• Moody’s on December 5, 2019 changed its outlook on five Pakistani banks to stable from negative and also confirmed B3 long-term deposit ratings, citing improvements in operating environment in the country.
• The rating agency upgraded Allied Bank Limited (ABL), Habib Bank Ltd (HBL), MCB Bank Limited (MCB), National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), and United Bank Ltd (UBL).
• “The banks’ rating actions reflect improvements in the operating environment in Pakistan and in the country’s sovereign credit profile, which affect the banks’ given their high government exposures that link their credit profiles to that of the government and expectation that the government’s capacity to support banks in case of need will not deteriorate,” it said in a statement


5. Haris Ahmad first Pakistani CG supervisor of full length animated movie

• Haris Ahmad has earned the unique distinction to be the first Pakistani Computer Graphics (CG) Supervisor of a full length animated international movie ‘Stardog and Turbocat’. The movie will be released on today (December 5, 2019) in 314 cinemas across the UK.
• Shortly, it will be released in China, South and North Americas and Europe. The film introduces a pair of loveable new super heroes and features a voice cast that include the famous Nick Frost, Luke Evans, Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy.
• The film directed by Ben Smith and made by Red Star 3D based in Sheffield, UK is being released by Kaleidoscope Entertainment


6. Nigeria jails ex-governor for fraud

• A Nigerian former state governor and serving senator was found guilty of fraud on December 5, 2019 and sentenced to 12 years in prison in a boost to President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft crusade.
• Orji Uzor Kalu was convicted in Lagos of misappropriating 7.2 billion naira ($20.06 million, 18.08 million euros) when he served as two-term governor of southeastern Abia state between 1999 and 2007.
• Judge Mohammed Idris also ordered that Kalu’s airline Slot, which he used to launder the funds, be forfeited to the Nigerian government


7. Japan launches $122bn stimulus

• Japan`s cabinet approved a $122 billion fiscal package on December 5, 2019 to support stalling growth in the world`s third-largest economy amid offshore risks and as policymakers look to sustain activity beyond the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
• The 13.2 trillion yen ($121.50bn) package is expected to push up gross domestic product by 1.4 per cent through fiscal 2021 and comes as Japan, like other major economies, looks to revive growth through spending as central banks rapidly run out of monetary policy options.
• However, Tokyo is also seeking to balance its need for stimulus with its drive to reduce its massive public debt, which is more than twice the size of its GDP and the industrial world`s largest debt pile


8. Pelosi OKs drafting of impeachment articles against Trump

• US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told congressional leaders on December 5, 2019 to draft articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, saying the president`s abuse of power `leaves us no choice but to act`.
• By asking the House Judiciary Committee chairman to draw up the charges, Pelosi, the top congressional Democrat, signalled that a formal impeachment process against the 45th president is all but assured.
• With a majority of members in the Democratic-controlled chamber already expressing intent to back the deeply divisive procedure, Trump is likely to become just the third president in US history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.


9. Nepal makes first arrest over `menstrual hut` death

• Police in Nepal have arrested the brother-in-law of a woman who died after she was banished to a `menstrual hut`, the first such arrest in the Himalayan nation as it seeks to end the practice.
• The body of Parbati Buda Rawat, 21, was found on Monday after she lit a fire to keep warm in a mud and stone hut and suffocated in Nepal`s western Achhan district, the latest victim of the centuries-old, `chhaupadi` custom, outlawed in 2005.
• `This is the first time we have arrested any person in connection with a death under the chhaupadi custom,` said Achham`s chief district officer, Bhoj Raj Shrestha


10. 13th South Asian Games: Haroon, Rab Nawaz, Naeem, Maaz, Sajid add to Pakistan’s gold tally

• The country’s top taekwondo fighter Haroon Khan, his teammate Rab Nawaz, 110 metre hurdler Mohammad Naeem and wushu fighters Maaz Khan and Sajid Hussain won gold medals on the fifth day of the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal on December 5, 2019 which took the country’s overall gold tally to 16.
• Till filing of the report Pakistan had claimed 16 gold, 22 silvers and 29 bronze medals.
• Haroon Khan, who is expected to win an Olympic seat next year, lived up to the billing when he downed India’s Niraj Choudhary 27-18 in the men’s 58kg final.
