6. Students protest in Kolkata as furore over hijab ban spreads in India

• The outrage and resentment over a ban on wearing of hijab at schools in an Indian state is spreading, not just in India itself but abroad as well.
• At least one Indian parliamentarian has objected to the ban as has a Nobel laureate. Pakistan`s foreign minister has also weighed in on the matter.
• For their part, hundreds of students in Kolkata on Wednesday chanted slogans and blocked roads in protest against the ban.
• MP Shashi Tharoor of Congress party said there is no law banning religious forms of dress in India. `(T) here is no law banning religious forms of dress like a Sikh turban or a crucifix around your neck or a tilak on the forehead, all of which are forbidden in France`s government schools but permitted in India`s,` he said in response to a question


7. UK scientists smash fusion record, raise hopes for cheap energy

• Scientists in Britain said on February 09, 2022 they have smashed a previous record for generating fusion energy, an achievement hailed a `milestone` on the protracted path towards harnessing a power source considered cheap and clean.
• Nuclear fusion is the same process that the sun uses to generate heat and proponents believe it could one day help address climate change by providing an abundant, safe and green source of energy.
• A team at the Joint European Torus (JET) facility near Oxford in central England generated 59 mega joules of sustained energy during an experiment in December, more than doubling a 1997 record, the UK Atomic Energy Authority said


8. Iran unveils missile, claims Israel within reach

• Iran`s Revolutionary Guard announced on February 09, 2022 the development of a surface-to-surface missile whose stated range would put Israel within reach.
• The Sepah news website said the missile was named Khaybarchekan after a victorious battle fought by Holy Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) in the seventh century.
• Armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri described it as a strategic, `long range` missile. The Sepah news said the missile has a range of 1,450 kilometres, runs on solid fuel and is capable of penetrating antimissile systems.
• It was unveiled during a visit to a surface-to-surface missile base of the Guards` air force, with the chief of the aerospace department Amirali Hajizadeh present


9. WHO, Taliban discuss `dire` health crisis

• The head of the World Health Organisation said on February 09, 2022 he had met with the Taliban`s health minister for talks on the `dire` health and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
• WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus revealed that he met Qalander Ebad for talks on Tuesday.
• Ebad is part of a Taliban delegation visiting Geneva for a week of talks with institutions and non-governmental agencies on humanitarian access and human rights, as Afghanistan`s new rulers expand their international engagement


10. NZ cancels T20 series against Australia

• New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on February 09, 2022 scrapped next month`s T20 International series against Australia, saying the move was `inevitable` due to strict Covid-19 border controls.
• NZC chief David White said a government decision to push back plans to open the border forced the cancellation of the three-match series, slated to take place in Napier on March 17, 18 and 20.
• `At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria,` White said
