• Rehman Malik, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and former interior minister, died on February 23, 2022 from Covid-related complications at a private hospital after battling for life for nearly a month. He was 70.

• The revived version of The Emancipator is a joint effort by Boston University`s Centre for Antiracist Research and The Boston Globes Opinion team that`s expected to launch in the coming months.
• Deborah Douglas and Amber Payne, co-editors-in-chief of the new online publication, say it will feature written and video opinion pieces, multimedia series, virtual talks and other content by respected scholars and seasoned journalists. The goal, they say, is to reframe the national conversation around racial injustice


8. Iran says talks on nuclear deal `in critical phase`

• Negotiations to revive the Iran nuclear deal have entered a `critical` stage during which some key issues still need to be resolved, Tehran`s top diplomat said on February 23, 2022.
• The 2015 accord had offered Iran sanctions relief in return for curbs on its nuclear programme, but the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 under then president Donald Trump.
• Western powers that have been locked in nuclear talks with Iran have said in the past week that a deal is within reach while stressing the ball is in the Islamic republic`s court. Iran`s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday that the negotiations had `reached a critical and important stage`


9. Pakistan Super League Shahnawaz powers Sultans past Qalandars, into final

• Just when Fakhar Zaman was threatening to take the game away from them, Multan Sultans took a strategic timeout.
• Shahnawaz Dahani, who was going to bowl the over that resumed play at a roaring Gaddafi Stadium, was given instructions by fast bowling coach Ottis Gibson.
• An animated Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan was taking consultations from head coach Andy Flower and spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed.
• The discussions in that three-minute break turned the game back in favour of the holders, taking them into Sunday`s final and silencing the capacity crowd rooting for the Qalandars

• Renowned academic and journalist Prof Dr Mehdi Hasan passed away in Lahore on February 23, 2022 after a protracted illness. He was 85.
• He suffered a heart attack a few years ago and had been bedridden for the last one year or so due to multiple health problems.
• He has left behind his wife Rakhshanda, a retired journalist, and two sons to mourn.
• Dr Hasan won acclaim because of his profound knowledge and principles he stood for through thick and thin. His colleagues vouchsafed that he struggled in life for standing up for the right cause despite being wronged and victimised
