6. S. Korea, US discuss nuclear exercises as tensions flare with North

• South Korea and the United States are discussing possible joint exercises using US nuclear assets, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said, as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un labelled the South its `undoubted enemy` in flaring cross-border tensions.
• Yoon`s comments, in a newspaper interview published on Monday, come after he called for `war preparation` with an `overwhelming` capability, following a year marked by the North`s record number of missile tests, and the intrusion of North Korean drones into the South last week.
• `The nuclear weapons belong to the United States, but planning, information sharing, exercises and training should be jointly conducted by South Korea and the United States, Yoon said in the interview with the ChosunIlbo newspaper


7. EU parliament chief moves to lift two MEPs` immunity

• The European Parliament on January 2, 2023 announced its chief, Roberta Metsola, had launched `an urgent procedure` to lift the immunity of two MEPs amid a corruption scandal linked to Qatar.
• The parliament did not give the lawmakers` names but said it was in response to an investigation by Belgian law enforcement into the graft allegations.
• Sources briefed on the Belgian probe said the two MEPs targeted by the procedure were an Italian, Andrea Cozzolino, and a Belgian, Marc Tarabella. Both are members of the centre-left Social and Democrats grouping in the parliament


8. Israel kills two Palestinians in West Bank

• The Israeli army killed two Palestinians in a West Bank raid on January 2, 2023 and demolished the homes of two Palestinians accused of killing an Israeli soldier.
• The Palestinian health ministry announced the deaths of `Mohammad Samer Hoshieh, 22, af ter being shot in the chest, and Fuad Mohammad Abed, 25, after being shot in the abdomen and thigh` during a raid by the Israeli army in Jenin.
• Israeli soldiers had entered the village of Kafr Dan,in Jenin, `in order to demolish the residences of the assailants who were involved in the shooting adjacent to the Gilboa crossing, in which Major Bar Falah was killed`, Israel`s military said


9. Strike kills 63 Russian troops in Ukraine

• Sixty-three Russian troops were killed in eastern Ukraine as Kyiv forces struck a camp using US-supplied Himars systems, the Russia`s defence ministry announced on January 2, 2022.
• Without claiming the strike, Ukraine`s military said the death toll from a strike in the town of Makiivka in the Moscow-controlled part of the eastern region of Donetsk was much higher, claiming nearly 400 troops were killed.
• It was the biggest loss of life reported by the Russian side so far in a conflict that has dragged on since President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade on February 24 last year. `As a result of a strike by four missiles with a high-explosive warhead on a temporary deployment point, 63 Russian servicemen were killed,` the Russia`s defence ministry said


10. Israel strikes Damascus airport, again

• Israeli missile strikes on the Syrian capital`s airport on January 2, 2023 killed four people including two soldiers and closed the runways for several hours, a rights monitor said.
• This is the second time in less than seven months that Damascus International Airport has been hit by Israel. The attack around 2am (2300 GMT) put the airport out of service until 9am, Syria`s state news agency SANA and officials said.
• Israel carried out the strike with `barrages of missiles targeting Damascus International Airport and its surroundings`, a military source told SANA, which reported that two Syrian soldiers were killed and two others wounded
