6. ECC okays additional export of sugar

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet has allowed additional sugar exports of 150,000 tonnes and approved immediate disbursement of Rs60 billion to the state-run Pakistan State Oil (PSO) to address its liquidity challenges and ensure a smooth supply chain.
• In a meeting presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday, the committee also decided to discontinue the subsidised supply of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to two Punjab-based fertiliser plants.
• On the recommendation of the Sugar Advisory Board (SAB)led by Food Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema, the ECC allowed the export of a total of 250,000 tonnes of sugar, including 100,000 tonnes already approved on Dec 15

7. UK set to proscribe Revolutionary Guard

• Britain will officially declare Iran`s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), which has arrested seven people with links to the United Kingdom over anti-government protests, as a terrorist group, the Telegraph reported on Monday, citing sources.
• The move, which will be announced within weeks, is supported by Britain`s security minister, Tom Tugendhat, and Home Secretary Suella Braverman, the report said.
• Proscribing Iran`s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group would mean that it would become a criminal offence to belong to the group, attend its meetings, and carry its logo in public


8. US, Arab world slam Israeli minister`s visit to Al-Aqsa compound

• The United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkiye were among those who condemned a visit by Israel`s extreme-right new national security minister to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound on January 3, 2023.
• The move by firebrand Itamar BenGvir has enraged Palestinians, while the US warned of steps which may harm the status quo.
• `Our government will not surrender to the threats of Hamas,`BenGvir vowed in a statement published by his spokesman, after the Palestinian militant group warned such a step was a `red line`.
• Ben-Gvir`s visit comes days after he took office as national security minister, with powers over the police, giving his decision to enter the highly sensitive site considerable weight


9. Kabul asks Islamabad to avoid `provocative statements`

• Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday that his government desired `good relations` with Pakistan and all neighbouring countries, but urged Islamabad to refrain from issuing `provocative and baseless` statements, Dawn.com reported.
• Mujahid said Pakistani officials had issued statements in recent days that were `highly regrettable`.
• The statement comes after the National Security Committee (NSC) on Monday categorically asked the Afghan Taliban regime, without directly naming them, to deny safe haven to Pakistani terrorist groups on its soil and end their patronage, while reiterating its intent to crush terrorist groups operating inside the country with full force. `The Islamic Emirate is trying its best to ensure that Afghanistan`s territory is not used against Pakistan or any other country,` he said, adding that Kabul was serious about achieving this objective


10. South Korea`s lunar orbiter sends photos of Earth, Moon

• South Korea`s first-ever lunar orbiter Danuri has sent black-and-white photos of the Moon`s surface and Earth, the national space centre said on January 3, 2023.
• Danuri a portmanteau of the Korean words for `Moon` and `enjoy` was launched on a SpaceX rocket from the United States in August 2022 and entered lunar orbit last month.
• Its images taken between December 24 and January1-showthelunar surface and Earth, and were shot from less than 120 kilometres (75 miles) over the Moon, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said in a statement
