1. Outage plunges country into darkness

• Almost the entire country plunged into darkness late on Saturday night after a major breakdown in the national grid shut down a number of hydel and thermal power stations one by one in stunning fashion.
• The breakdown was so severe that the country`s entire power transmission, dispatch and distribution system of over 22,000MW tripped, leaving cities and towns in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in darkness.
• According to the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), the breakdown took place when frequency in the system suddenly dropped to zero from 50.


2. Justice Qaiser takes oath as PHC chief justice

• Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan was sworn-in as the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court at the Governor`s House here on January 9, 2021.
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman administered the oath to him.
• The chief justice`s post had fallen vacant on Nov 12 after the incumbent, Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth, died of novel coronavirus.


3. Pakistan witnesses 36pc decline in terrorists attacks in 2020

• Pakistan witnessed over 36 percent decline in terrorist attacks during 2020 but Sindhi and Baloch insurgent groups intensified militant attacks during the past year.
• A decline of over 36 percent in terrorist attacks and 38 percent of those killed in such incidents was recorded in the country in 2020 as compared with 2019, says a Pakistan Security Report 2020 released by the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), an Islamabad-based think tank.


4. Green Loan Scheme launched in Punjab

• Green Loan Scheme has been launched for shifting traditional brick kilns to zigzag technology, said Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht.
• Under this scheme launched by Punjab Disasters Management Authority (PDMA) with the collaboration of Bank of Punjab (BoP), a loan of Rs 1 million with the mark up of 3 to 4% will be provided under the Prime Minister’s Kamyab Nojawan Program and the Punjab Government’s Rozgar Scheme. The Punjab government is providing subsidy for the transfer of zigzag technology to kilns across the province


5. With 62 on board, Indonesian plane crashes into sea

• A Sriwijaya Air plane crashed into the sea on Saturday minutes after taking off from Indonesia`s capital Jakarta on a domestic flight with 62 people on board, and their fate was not known.
• The Boeing 737-500, en route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan, disappeared from radar screens after taking off just after 2.30pm (0730 GMT) 30 minutes after the scheduled time because of heavy rain


6. US charges three Sri Lankans over 2019 Easter attacks

• The US Justice Department charged three Sri Lankans on January 8, 2021 with supporting terrorism for their participation in the 2019 Easter attack that killed 268 people.
• The department said the three were part of the `ISIS in Sri Lanka` group behind the attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels in three cities on the Christian holiday on April 21, 2019.
• The militant Islamic State group claimed responsibility and called the well-planned attacks a retaliation for Western coalition actions against the group in Syria. Five Americans were among the dead


7. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip given Covid-19 jab

• Britain`s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip received Covid-19 vaccinations on January 9, 2021, Buckingham Palace said, in a rare public comment on the private health matters of the long-serving monarch.
• `The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have today received Covid-19 vaccinations,` a Buckingham Palace spokesman said


8. Qatar-Saudi border reopens after thaw

• Qatar and Saudi Arabia reopened their land border on January 9, 2020, correspondents saw, as they restore ties following a landmark deal to end a three and a half year rift.
• Saudi shut its side of Qatar`s only land border in June 2017 as part of a package of sanctions it said was a response to Doha`s backing radical Islamist groups and closeness to Iran.
• Qatar always denied the charges


9. US sets new record with nearly 290,000 Covid cases in 24 hours

• The United States hit a new record for coronavirus cases January 9, 2021, notching nearly 290,000 in a span of 24 hours, according to a real-time tally by Johns Hopkins University. The country, the hardest-hit in the world by the Covid-19 pandemic, also recorded 3,676 virus deaths in the same day, the Baltimore-based University said. The day before, the US had recorded a record of nearly 4,000 deaths in 24 hours.
• Some 131,000 people are currently hospitalized in the US for Covid-19, according to the COVID Tracking Project


10. HBL PSL releases teams` retention list; draft to be held today

• Defending champions Karachi Kings have retained Pakistan captain Babar Azam and Islamabad United have kept Pakistan`s white-ball vice-captain Shadab Khan as the two sides also completed a successful trade of Englishman Alex Hales and Colin Ingram of South Africa ahead of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2021 Player Draft, which will take place at the High Performance Centre on January 9, 2021.
• Babar was the Player of the HBL PSL 2020, while Shadab was named captainof Team of the HBL PSL 2020. Both players, who are automatic selections in the national men`s white-ball sides, will once again be one of the star attractions in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2021 that will be held in Karachi and Lahore from Feb 20 to March 22
