6. Up to 4m children still living next to contaminated floodwater: Unicef

• The UN Children`s Fund (Unicef) warned on January 09, 2023 that up to four million children are still living near contaminated and stagnant floodwaters, risking their survival and well-being, more than four months after a national state of emergency was declared in Pakistan.
• Acute respiratory infections among children, a leading cause of child mortality worldwide, have skyrocketed in the flood-stricken areas. In addition, the number of cases among children identified as suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the flood-affected areas monitored by Unicef nearly doubled between July and December as compared to 2021, and estimated 1.5m children are still in need of life-saving nutrition interventions

7. Nato, EU eye `next level` partnership amid Russia threat

• Nato and the EU are seeking to ramp up cooperation after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine upended the European security order, a joint declaration on January 09, 2023 said.
• The two Brussels-based organisations have been looking to improve coordination for years, despite fears in some quarters that efforts to bolster the EU`s role in defence could undermine the US-led alliance.

• After thousands of Bolsonaro`s backers stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace on Sunday, police in riot gear amassed at the pro-Bolsonaro camp outside Brasilia`s army headquarters, while troops took down tents, witnesses said. The protesters were dispersed.
• President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro`s leftist rival who took office on Jan 1 after a narrow October election win, promised to bring those responsible for the violence to justice, after demonstrators broke windows and furniture, destroyed art work and stole guns and artifacts


9. Saudi Arabia lifts restriction on Haj pilgrim numbers

• Saudi Arabia will remove Covid-19 restrictions for the 2023 Haj season and host pre-pandemic numbers of pilgrims, the kingdom`s ministry of Haj and Umrah said on January 09, 2023.
• In 2019, the last year before the pandemic struck, some 2.6 million people performed the Haj. The kingdom allowed only limited numbers from its residents in 2020 and 2021 before it welcomed back one million foreign pilgrims in 2022.
• The ministry of Haj said in a tweet that the kingdom will impose no restrictions, including age limits, for this season
