6. EU approves Rs7.8bn grant for GB, KP

• The European Union has approved a grant of Rs7.86 billion (31.5 million euros) to support sustainable and climate-resilient projects in Gilgit Baltistan and Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to an official statement.
• This grant will be utilised towards building energy projects through implementation partners, said a statement by GB chief secretary`s office.
• The project will help alleviate the suffering of the people who are at the forefront, bearing the impact of climate change and global warming.
• GB Chief Secretary Mohiyuddin Ahmad Wani expressed joy over the grant and said the EU was supporting the GB government at a time when it is facing problems due to severe climate change


7. First spectrum refarming framework prepared

• The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has finalised the draft of the first-ever Telecom Airwaves Spectrum Refarming Framework.
• The framework on spectrum refarming has been prepared with recommendations from Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) and industry stakeholders.
• Frequency or airwaves spectrum refarming is a process governing the repurposing of frequency bands that have historically been allocated for legacy cellular services for a new generation of mobile technologies

8. S. Arabia mulls boosting investment in Pakistan to $10bn

• Saudi Arabia said it could increase its investments in Pakistan`s economy to $10 billion, the Saudi state news agency reported on January 10, 2023, as well as increase the ceiling on deposits into the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) by $2bn, to $5bn.
• Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has directed a study to increase Saudi Arabian investments to $10bn from the previous $1bn announced in August, the news agency reported, citing a statement from the crown prince.
• He has also asked the Saudi Development Fund (SDF) which provides soft loans and grants to developing countries as a means to bolster allies and cement new relationships to consider raising the ceiling for Saudi deposits into the SBP as part of measures to support the struggling economy. Last month, the Saudis extended the terms of an existing $3bn deposit in the SBP it made in 2021


9. Ex-Maoist rebel named Nepal`s PM for third time

• Former Maoist rebel Pushpa Kamal Dahal was confirmed as Nepal`s prime minister for a third time on January 10, 2023, winning almost unanimous backing from legislators even though November`s election returned a hung parliament.
• Dahal, who still goes by his nom de guerre Prachanda, meaning `fierce`, secured 268 ballots in a vote of confidence in the 275-member parliament.
• Nevertheless, his seven party coalition may find it hard to govern as many of the allies have conflicting interests on looming issues including problems of secularism, the shape of the federal government and the distribution of citizenship ID cards


10. Russia pushes to capture Ukraine`s salt mining town

• Russian troops have stepped up an assault on the small salt mining town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine, forcing Ukrainian troops to repel waves of attacks led by mercenary forces, officials in Kyiv said.
• Britain`s defence ministry said on January 10, 2023 that Russian and forces of the Wagner contract group were probably now in control of most of the town, in the industrial Donbas region, after advances in the last four days.
• Seizing Soledar would be advantageous to Russian forces as they fight for control of the city of Bakhmut, a few kilometres to the southwest, where troops from both sides have been taking heavy losses in some of the most intense trench warfare since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly 11 months ago. It would also give Russia a welcome battlefield victory after a series of setbacks in recent months
