1. ECP rejects Sindh govt`s plea for another delay in LG elections

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on January 13, 2023 rejected the Sindh government`s latest request to postpone local government elections in the Karachi and Hyderabad divisions, and ruled that the polls would be held on Jan 15 (tomorrow) as per schedule.
• The ECP members made the decision during a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja at its headquarters in Islamabad. The commission deliberated the Sindh government`s request to postpone elections in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions and two tehsils of Khairpur.
• The meeting came hours after the provincial government announced in the wee hours of Friday that the long-awaited local government elections would not be held in the two divisions


2. Pakistan welcomes world help on Kashmir: FO

• Pakistan has always said that it would welcome the international community, including the United States, to play their role in promoting peace in the region, including facilitating dialogue and resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
• This was stated by Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at a weekly briefing on January 13, 2023 when a journalist asked whether Pakistan foresaw any mediatory role of the US which can provide an opportunity to open the closed doors for dialogue between Pakistan and India.
• Commenting on an article claiming that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was all set to visit Pakistan last year but at the eleventh hour everything got dropped, the spokesperson dismissed the report as speculative

3. World Bank to help rehabilitate irrigation channel

• A World Bank official and irrigation expert Francios Onimus has said that Akram Wah originating from Kotri barrage will also be rehabilitated under the Sindh Water and Agriculture Transformation (SWAT) project, which will enable the channel to carry water flows as per its designed discharge.
• Mr Onimus, who was co-task team leader of the project, said at a meeting of Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (Sida) officials at Sida secretariat on Friday that under agricultural component of SWAT farmers would be given subsidy in order to encourage them to cultivate high-yield varieties of crops with lesser water flows.
• He said that WB would provide technical and financial support during execution of the project


4. Punjab comes to Balochistan`s rescue with 21,000MT wheat

• Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on January 13, 2023 announced sending 21,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Balochistan to help the province meet its needs.
• Chairing a meeting of the cabinet committee on wheat to review the latest situation of stocks and flour prices, the CM noted that the federal government was responsible for supplying wheat to other provinces, including Balochistan. But it had failed to fulfil this important responsibility.
• `Balochistan requested the Punjab government to provide 10,000 tonnes, but we decided to send 21,000 metric tonnes more than their requirement, Mr Elahi said

5. Sri Lanka to cut army by half after financial crisis
