6. Khunjerab Pass opens today to move machinery

• The Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab Pass will be temporarily opened to transport stranded goods as well as machinery needed for execution of development work on Diamer-Bhasha dam.
• The Khunjerab Pass remains closed for four months, from December to April every year, under a border protocol agreement signed between the two countries.
• The route closed in November 2019 after the outbreak of Covid-19 in China was opened two-and-a-half years later in June 2022 under a new agreement and SOPs only to transport goods from China to Pakistan

7. S. Korean investor to sell Lotte Chemical to YB Group

• A South Korean chemical company announced on January 17, 2023 it`s exiting the Pakistan market after 13 years.
• Lotte Chemical Company Pakistan Ltd said its South Korea-based majority shareholder is selling its entire stake of 75.01 per cent in the local firm to optimise its overall business portfolio.
• Separately, Lucky Core Industries Ltd said it`s buying the shareholding from the foreign investor.
• Neither of the two companies disclosed the size of the transaction in their respective securities filings


8. Oxfam calls for reducing number of billionaires

• The number of billionaires should be reduced by half by 2030 through higher taxes and other policies to make the world more equal, Oxfam said on January 16, 2023 as global elites meet in Davos.
• The aid group made its plea as the Swiss Alpine village hosts political leaders, CEOs and celebrities for the week-long World Economic Forum starting on Monday.
• In a report titled `Survival of the Richest`, Oxfam said billionaires had doubled their wealth over the last 10 years, with the wealthiest one per cent gaining 74 times more than the bottom 50pc


9. Russia produces first nuclear warheads for super torpedo

• Russia has produced the first set of Poseidon nuclear capable super torpedoes that are being developed for deployment on the Belgorod nuclear submarine, TASS reported on Monday, citing an unidentified defence source.
• Since a grim New Year`s Eve message describing the West as Russia`s true enemy in the war on Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin has sent several signals that Russia will not back down. He has despatched hypersonic missiles to the Atlantic and appointed his top general to run the war. US and Russian officials have both described Poseidon as a new category of retaliatory weapon, capable of triggering radioactive ocean swells to render coastal cities uninhabitable


10. Japan, India start first joint fighter jet drill

• Japan and India began their first joint fighter jet exercise on January 16, 2023 near Tokyo as the countries upgrade defence and security ties with an eye on China`s growing military might.
• The 11-day joint exercise will involve eight Japanese fighter jets, with India sending four fighters, two transport aircraft and an aerial refuelling tanker, Japan`s defence ministry said.
• Around 150 Indian Air Force personnel are taking part in the exercise at the Hyakuri Air Base in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo
