6. Taliban hail Oslo meet as success `in itself`

• On their first visit to Europe since returning to power, the Taliban held landmark talks with Western diplomats in Oslo on January 24, 2022 over the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, a meeting the Islamist regime`s delegation called an `achievement in itself`.
• The international community has however insisted the Taliban must respect human rights before aid can be resumed to Afghanistan, where hunger threatens more than half population.

• The South China Sea and self-governing Taiwan are two of China`s most sensitive territorial issues and both are frequent areas of tension between the United States and China.
• US Navy ships routinely sail close to Chinese-occupied islands in the South China Sea to challenge Chinese sovereignty claims, as well as through the Taiwan Strait, to Beijing`s anger

• Yemen rebels fired missiles at the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, with coalition forces hitting back by blowing up the insurgents` launchpad as a sharp escalation of hostilities entered a second week on January 24, 2022.
• Witnesses saw bright flashes arcing over the Emirati capital Abu Dhabi in the early hours of Monday as two ballistic missiles were intercepted, scattering debris.
• Nobody was hurt in the attack, which came a week after the Iran-backed Houthi rebels killed three people in a drone and missile assault on the city, triggering a volley of deadly air strikes on Yemen


9. Facebook claims making massive supercomputer

• Facebook`s parent company Meta said on January 24, 2022 it was launching one of the world`s most powerful supercomputers to boost its capacity to process data, despite persistent disputes over privacy and disinformation.
• The US tech giant said the array of machines could process images and video up to 20 times faster than their current systems.
• The supercomputer, built from thousands of processors, will be used to `seamlessly analyse text, images, and video together; develop new augmented reality tools; and much more`, the firm said in a blog post written by two of its artificial intelligence (AI) researchers


10. Afridi, Babar bring more glory to Pakistan

• Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi was named men`s Cricketer of the Year on January 24, 2022, combining with team-mates Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan to help the country dominate the annual awards announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
• England captain Joe Root won the Test Player of the Year honours to prevent a sweep of the men`s awards by Pakistan.
• Captain Babar was adjudged One-day Cricketer of the Year while his deputy Rizwan had grabbed the T20 award the previous day.
• A fourth Pakistani cricketer, Fatima Sana, had won the Emerging Women`s Cricketer of the year award on Sunday.
