January 04, 2020: National Current Affairs

1. NA panel approves key bills with unusual haste

• The National Assembly`s standing committee on defence on January 3, 2020 passed the three separate bills referred to it soon after being tabled in the parliament to amend laws governing the tenures of services chiefs and chairman joint chiefs of staff committee.
• The entire exercise, which was completed within three hours, was aimed at removing ambiguity in laws as per the Supreme Court`s directive to provide legal ground to the extension given to Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa after the SC suspended controversial notifications of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government in this regard last year.
• While members of the Senate standing committee on defence also attended the meeting of the NA standing committee on a special invitation, the senators did not vote, indicating that the key bills will be referred to them for approval once these sailed through the lower house of parliament.


2. PM to inaugurate modern police station in Mianwali today

• Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate on January 4, 2020 (today) a new police station in Mianwali that has been established under the Special Initiative of Police Stations (SIPs).
• This is one of the 50 police stations that are being built on modern lines to mitigate the problems of the masses.
• Former IG Punjab Arif Nawaz launched this scheme in October last year after the task was assigned by Prime Minister Imran Khan to change the thana culture in the largest province. Mr Arif had given Nov 30 deadline for upgrading the 50 police stations under the SIPs.


3. Pakistan, Iran to boost trade relations

• Pakistan and Iran will help each other in dealing with the difficulties they face, and take steps for promotion of trade and economic activities between the two countries.
• This was agreed during the 23rd meeting of the Pak Iran Joint Border Commission which concluded here on Friday after three days of deliberations.
• The meeting took various decisions for preventing illegal border crossing, stopping illegal supply of Iranian diesel and petrol, taking measures to check terrorism on both sides of the border and providing more incentives for promotion of bilateral trade.
• Balochistan Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove and Chief Secretary Fazeel Asghar led the Pakistani delegation at the meeting while Deputy Governor of the Iranian province of Sistan Baluchistan Mohammad Hadi Marshi represented the Iranian delegation.


4. KU, Sindh police sign MoU to strengthen cooperation

• The University of Karachi and the Sindh police on January 4, 2020 signed a memorandum of understanding to establish and strengthen educational, scientific and research cooperation between the two institutions, says a statement.
• The acting Vice Chancellor of Karachi University Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and the Inspector General of Sindh Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam inlced the MoU at the IG Sindh Police Office.
• The MoU aims to establish a model DNA data laboratory and databank and joint publication of reference materials. The MoU also aims to design and develop different degrees, diplomas, certificate courses and syllabus for different police forensic scientists and experts.


5. Russia stops oil supplies to Belarus

• Russia has stopped shipping oil to Belarus, said the Belarusian state energy firm on January 3, 2020, after the two countries failed to reach a deal on supplies by a Jan 1 deadline.
• Moscow said oil flow through Belarus a key transit route for Russian oil and gas to Europe was continuing. But a draggedout dispute could threaten supplies.
• Belneftekhim said in a statement that loading to Belarus`s two oil refineries had been reduced to a technical minimum after supplies from Russia were halted.


6. ME on knife-edge as US kills Iran`s feared general

• A furious Iran threatened to avenge a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian commander in Baghdad on January 3, 2020, raising fears of a wider regional conflict between the arch-foes.
• The Pentagon said US President Donald Trump had ordered Qassem Soleimani`s targeted killing after a pro-Iran mob this week laid siege to the American embassy in the Iraqi capital, throwing rocks and setting fires.
• Iran`s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei swiftly promised `severe revenge` for the death of military mastermind Soleimani, the biggest escalation yet in a feared proxy war between Iran and the US on Iraqi soil.
• Tens of thousands took to the streets of Tehran chanting `Death to America` and holding up posters of Soleimani, who was widely admired in the Islamic republic.


7. Ethical veganism is a protected belief: UK judge

• A British judge ruled on January 3, 2020 that ethical veganism is a philosophical belief and is protected under anti-discrimination laws.
• The ruling came as part of an employment tribunal being heard in Norwich, eastern England, between Jordi Casamitjana and his former employers the League Against Cruel Sports, a group that campaigns against blood sports such as recreational hunting.
• The decision `will influence the life of many vegans`, said Casamitjana, who declined to discuss the rest of the ongoing case for legal reasons.
• Judge Robin Postle determined that ethical veganism meets the tests required to be a philosophical belief and is therefore protected under the Equality Act 2010.


8. Biggest bloom: `world`s largest` flower spotted in Indonesia

• Indonesian conservationists say they`ve spotted the biggest specimen ever of what`s already been billed as one of the world`s largest flowers.
• The giant Rafflesia tuan-mudae a fleshy red flower with white blister-like spots on its enormous petals came in at a whopping 111 centimetres (3.6 foot) in diameter.
• That`s bigger than the previous record of 107 centimetres on a bloom also found in the jungles of West Sumatra several years ago


9. Poor soil health to hit food, water security: expert

• As water shortages, high temperatures and rising greenhouse gas emissions threaten food production, countries around the world are looking somewhere new for solutions the soil.
• For decades, farmers wanting to boost their yields have focused their attention on fertilisers, technology and new seed varieties. Instead, they should be looking under their feet, according to experts, who warn that years of erosion and degradation of the soil through intensive farming have created the conditions for a global food production crisis.
• `Data suggests that if we do not restore global soil health, it is highly likely the consequences within 10 years will be many, many millions facing food and water insecurity,` British soil expert John Crawford told the Thomson Reuters Foundation

• A number of Pakistan players have shown good performances during the British Junior Squash Championship being held in Birmingham, according to the results received here on Friday.
• Haris Qasim reached the third round of the boys` Under19 event after beating Taylor Carrick 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 11-2 but compatriot Hamza Sharif failed to join him after suffering am8-11,5-11,10-121osstoEngland`s Max Forster. Hamza had earlier beaten Czech Lubos Walter 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 in the first round.
• Noor Zaman went one better than Haris in the Under-17 event, outclassing Karim Farrag of the Czech Republic 11-7, 11-3, 13-11 to reach the fourth round
