1. Imran asks UN to send military observers to LoC

• Apprehending a false flag operation by India, Prime Minister Imran Khan on January 19, 2020 urged the United Nations to send military observers to the Line of Control (LOC) to get first-hand information about repeated violations of ceasefire by the Indian forces, killing innocent civilians.
• In his tweets, PM Khan demanded UN action and said Pakistan would have to retaliate against Indian armed forces` indiscriminate firing from across the LoC that may cause a war-like situation in the sub-continent.
• He said Pakistan would not continue to watch as India carried out military attacks along the LoC targeting civilians. `I want to make [it] clear to India and the international community that if India continues its military attacks killing civilians across LoC, Pakistan will find it increasingly difficult to remain an inactive observer along the LoC.


2. PN ships visit Seychelles port

• Pakistan Navy`s ships Moawin and Aslat visited Port Victoria, Seychelles, as part of its overseas deployment around the African region.
• During the visit, mission commander and commanding officers of the ships called on important authorities of Seychelles, visited Foyer De Nazareth Orphanage, Victoria, besides holding various social and professional engagements in the host country, according to a press release.
• Upon arrival at Port Victoria, the PN ships were extended a warm welcome by Seychelles` authorities. The mission commander, along with commanding officers of the ships, called on the vice president of the Republic of Seychelles, chief of Seychelles Defence Forces and other prominent authorities.


3. Bill passed by NA will address issues of persons with disabilities: WHO

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that a bill recently passed by the National Assembly would address a number of issues of persons with disabilities.
• `We hope that the bill would be passed by the Senate of Pakistan with same interest and will be implemented in letter and spirit,` said WHO`s technical adviser Dr Maryam Mallick.
• The `ICT Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2020` has been passed by the National Assembly.
• Dr Mallick said Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen M. Mazari took personalinterest in getting the bill passed from the house


4. Muhammad Khan Lehri reappointed adviser to CM Balochistan

• Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani has reappointed Mohammad Khan Lehri his adviser on labour and manpower.
• On January 19, 2020, the chief minister had withdrawn the portfolio of adviser on secondary education department from Mr Lehri.
• Member of the provincial assembly Mohammad Khan Lehri has been handed over the charge of labour and manpower department.
• Mr Lehri was from the provincial education department


5. Another feather in the cap of Pakistani climber

• Jabbar Bhatti, who is attempting to summit all seven highest peaks around the world, has conquered Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.
• Alpine Club of Pakistan officially confirmed on Janu that Jabbar Bhatti climbed 6,962 metre-high Mount AconcaguaonJanuary17,the highest peak in South America.
• `According to our records, Jabbar Bhatti is the third Pakistani after Samina Baig and her brother Mirza Ali, to conquer Mount Aconcagua. He reached Argentina on January 5, to climb this mountain.
• On May 21, 2017, retired Col Abdul Jabbar Bhatti became the fourth Pakistani to stand atop 8,848 metres tall Mount Everest. However, Jabbar Bhatti and his Nepalese Sherpa had to be rescued from the death zone, where he was stranded at 8,600 metres. It took nine rescuers to bring them down to safety of the base camp. Both climbers, who had run out of bottled oxygen, got frost bites on their hands and toes. It took him one-and-a-half months to complete the Everest expedition. Jabbar Bhatti has lost all of his fingers on both hands after Mount Everest.


6. WHO warns of leishmaniasis outbreak in February

• The World Health Organisation has warned of outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in February and has called for scaling up awareness regarding preventive measures as well as ensuring proper medication of the infected people.
• `In the wake of impending outbreak this year gain, we have started preparing for control in collaboration with the provincial government,` the WHO officials told Dawn.
• They said that the world health agency was in contact with Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination because the skin ailment was endemic in the entire country and a strategy was needed to prevent its violent outbreaks.


7. Founder of S. Korean retail giant Lotte dies

• Lotte Group founder Shin Kyuk-ho, who started manufacturing chewing gum in 1948 in Japan and built the business into South Korea`s No. 5 conglomerate with interests ranging from retail to chemicals, died on January 19, 2020, the company SHIN Kyuk-ho said. He was 98.
• He was the last of the South Korean entrepreneurs who founded the country`s major chaebols, or family-run conglomerates, that now dominate Asia`s fourth-largest economy.
• Lotte was founded in 1948 as a chewing gum maker in Japan by Shin, who moved to the neighbouring country when the Korean peninsula was under Japanese colonial rule.


8. Israel building underground defence system on Lebanon border

• Israel`s military said it began construction of an underground defence system on January 19, 2020 along its northern frontier with Lebanon to protect against cross border tunnels.
• The infrastructure project will identify underground acoustic and seismic activity indicating tunnel digging, accompanied other defensive measures, said Lt. Col.
• Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman.
• Israel destroyed a series of what it said were attack tunnels last year, dug under the border by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The group battled Israel to a stalemate in a month long war in 2006. Hezbollah is closely allied with Iran, Israel`s greatest regional foe, and has vowed to retaliate for Americas killing of a top Iranian general in a drone strike earlier this month.


9. World powers likely to end meddling in Libya

• World leaders were poised to commit to ending all foreign meddling in Libya`s war at a Berlin summit on January 19, 2020, but calls were growing for an international force to ensure that pledges are put into action.
• The presidents of Russia, Turkey and France were among global chiefs at the talks held under the auspices of the United Nations, which wants foreign powers wielding influence in the region to stop interfering in the war be it through weapons, troops or financing.
• Leaders of both warring factions strongman Khalifa Haftar and the head of Tripoli`s UN-recognised government Fayez al-Sarraj were also in Berlin for the first such gathering since 2018


10. SpaceX launches, destroys rocket in astronaut escape test

• SpaceX completed the last big test of its crew capsule before launching astronauts in as little as two months, mimicking an emergency escape shortly after liftoff on January 19, 2020.
• No one was aboard for the wild ride in the skies above Cape Canaveral, just two mannequins.
• A Falcon 9 rocket blasted off as normal, but just over a minute into its supersonic flight, the Dragon crew capsule catapulted off the top 12 miles above the Atlantic.
