1. LHC verdict sends Punjab into political predicament
• A five-judge Lahore High Court (LHC) bench on June 30, 2022 ordered a recount of votes cast in the April 16 election for the Punjab chief minister after excluding 25 votes of defecting MPAs of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), and in case a candidate f ails to secure a majority, go for a run-off poll where a contender requires a majority vote of the members present in the house.
• Meanwhile, one of the petitioners in the case, the PTI, has decided to move the Supreme Court on Friday morning (July 1, 2022) against the verdict for not allowing it enough time to gather its members.
• `The presiding officer (deputy speaker) of the election held on April 16, 2022 is, therefore, directed to recount votes after excluding 25 votes of the defecting members,` stated the short order of the majority decision handed down by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan, Justice Shahid Jamil Khan, Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, Justice Sajid Mahmood Sethi and Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh. Justice Sethi concurred with the short order, however, recorded separate reasons in a dissenting note.
• It said the session, for the purpose of a recount, would be held on July 1 (today) at 4pm
2. Rs164bn AJK budget approved amid opposition boycott
• The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly on June 30, 2022 approved Rs163.7 billion budget for the fiscal year 2022-23 without any disruption in the absence of the 20-member opposition.
• AJK Finance Minister Abdul Majid Khan presented one after the other demands for grant of Rs135.2bn for recurring expenditures and Rs28.5bn for developmental activities in the house presided over by the ruling PTPs Mohammad Rafique Nayyar as member of the panel of chairmen.
• Since the opposition continued its boycott of the budget session, it was smooth sailing for Mr Khan as he did not face any cut motion.
• The house also accorded approval to the revised budget for 2021-22 to the tune of Rs135.7bn, including Rs22.8bn for developmental activities
3. GB okays budget with outlay of Rs119.3bn
• The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly on June 30, 2022 approved the budget for the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23) with an outlay of Rs119.3 billion.
• Meanwhile, taking to the social media platform Twitter, the Office of the GB Chief Secretary in a series of tweets said that the creation of a revenue authority in GB was unanimously supported in the session.
• `Today during the concluding session of the budget for the year 202223, the assembly of Gilgit-Baltistan has taken a giant step towards self sufficiency by unanimously supporting the creation of Gilgit-Baltistan Revenue Authority (GBRA). Gilgit Baltistan has a huge potential for collection of sales tax on services because of its booming tourism industry and other affiliated service based industries like transport, food etc,` the official tweeted. However this potential wasn`t maturing due to absence of an effective revenue collection system
4. Unvaccinated people won`t be allowed into govt offices under fresh NCOC guidelines
• As the surge in Covid-19 cases continues unabated, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on June 30, 2022 issued new guidelines suggesting unvaccinated people should not be allowed to enter government offices.
• Moreover, 641 people were infected with the virus during the past 24 hours, with the national positivity rate touching 3.41 per cent. Two persons succumbed to the virus and 119 patients were on critical care.
• An official of the Ministry of National Health Services said that unfortunately the pandemic had bounced back in the country. `Cases double in every five days, the number of patients being hospitalised is increasing and deaths are also being reported. It is worrisome that detection beyond Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore still has no signs of improvement despite repeated push,` he said
5. Jackson sworn in as first Black woman on US Supreme Court
• Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in on June 30, 2022 as a US Supreme Court justice, making history as the first Black woman on the nation`s top judicial body while joining it at a time when its conservative majority has been flexing its muscles in major rulings.
• Jackson, 51, joins the liberal bloc of a court with a 6-3 conservative majority. Her swearing in as President Joe Biden`s replacement for retiring liberal Justice Stephen Breyer came six days after the court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade landmark that legalised abortion nationwide. Breyer, at 83 the court`s oldest member, officially retired on Thursday.
• `With a full heart, I accept the solemn responsibility of supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States and administering justice without fear or favor,` Jackson said in a statement
