• More than a dozen people were killed, and at least 60 were injured, across the United States during the American Independence Day weekend including six who were shot dead during a Fourth of July parade in Chicago on July 4, 2022.
• The shootings followed countrywide protests against alleged police brutality against an unarmed black man, Jayland Walker in Akron, Ohio, last week.
• Investigations showed that policemen fired 60 bullets into Walker as he was running away from them.

• Sudan`s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on July 4, 2022 the army would make way for a civilian government and would `not participate` in national talks facilitated by the UN and regional blocs.
• The decision was taken `to make room for political and revolutionary forces and other national factions` to form a civilian government, he said, months after the October coup ousted civilians from a transitional administration.
• Widespread international condemnation and aid cuts followed the putsch, the latest in the impoverished northeast African country


9. Al Jazeera journalist likely killed by Israel, says US

• The United States said on July 4, 2022 that Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by gunfire from Israeli positions but that there was no reason to believe her death was intentional.
• The State Department also said the United States could not make a `definitive conclusion` on the origin of the bullet that killed her on May 11, which was handed over by the Palestinian Authority. `Ballistic experts determined the bullet was badly damaged, which prevented a clear conclusion,` State Department spokesman Ned Price said after what he called `extremely detailed forensic analysis` with outside examiners.
• Abu Akleh`s death provoked a furor, with the Palestinian Authority alleging a war crime, prompting angry denials by Israel, a close US ally which President Joe Biden is visiting in two weeks


10. Ukraine `flag will fly high` at Olympics: IOC chief

• Olympics chief Thomas Bach on Sunday said the organisation would ensure that Ukrainian athletes could compete at the 2024 Games despite the Russian invasion.
• Speaking during a visit to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Bach pledged to increase the amount of IOC funding for athletes from the war-torn nation.
• That will ensure that at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and at the Olympic Winter Games in 2026 in Cortina Milano, `the Ukrainian flag will fly high`, said Bach.
• `The IOC will triple the fund we have been establishing at the very beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine from $2.5 million to $7.5 million,` he added
