6. Sri Lanka in diplomatic spat over confiscated Russian plane

• Sri Lanka`s main airport on June 4, 2022 denied the island nation`s government was behind a decision to detain an Aeroflot aircraft, after Russia lodged a diplomatic protest over the move.
• The Airbus A330 was seized at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Thursday, the same day it arrived from Moscow, after a directive from a court in the capital Colombo.
• Flight SU289 was about to return to the Russian capital with 191 passengers and 13 crew aboard.
• Sri Lanka`s top envoy was summoned to the Russian foreign ministry on Friday to receive a `resolute protest` over the detention, Russian state news agency TASS reported


7. Japanese man becomes world`s oldest to sail solo across Pacific

• An 83-year-old yachtsman arrived in Japan early on June 4, 2022 morning after a solo, non-stop trip across the Pacific, becoming the oldest person ever to achieve the feat.
• Famed ocean adventurer Kenichi Horie`s arrival in the Kii Strait off western Japan capped a two-month trip that started from a yacht harbour in San Francisco in March.
• It was only the latest seagoing achievement by the Japanese octogenarian, who in 1962 voyaged from Japan to San Francisco at age 23, becoming the first person in the world to sail alone across the Pacific. The public relations team for his most recent voyage said Horie`s return to Japan made him the world`s oldest person to pull off a solo, non-stop crossing of the largest and deepest ocean on Earth


8. Tunisian judges to strike for a week in protest over purge

• Tunisia`s judges will suspend work in courts for a week and hold a sit-in to protest against a purge of their ranks, amid growing tensions over the president`s attempts to consolidate one-man rule.
• President Kais Saied this week dismissed 57 judges, accusing them of corruption and protecting terrorists in a crackdown on the judiciary his latest step to tighten his grip on power in the North African country.
• Judge Hammadi Rahmani said a meeting of judges on Saturday voted unanimously to suspend work in all courts, and to start the sit-in. The strike will start on Monday in all judicial institutions and could be extended, Anas Hamaidi, president of the Association of Judges, said


9. Ukraine `pushes back` Russian troops in battlefield city

• Ukraine said on June 4, 2022 it had recaptured a swathe of the battlefield city of Sievierodonetsk, in a rare counteroffensive against Russia`s main assault force that had been steadily advancing in the east.
• The Ukrainian claim could not be independently verified and Moscow said its own forces were making gains there. But it was the first time Kyiv has claimed to have launched a big counter-attack in Sieverodonetsk after days of yielding ground there.
• Russia has concentrated its forces on Sievierodonetsk in recent weeks for one of the biggest ground battles of the war, with Moscow appearing to bet its campaign on capturing one of two eastern provinces it claims on behalf of separatist proxies


10. Climber banned for faking Everest ascent reaches summit

• An Indian climber banned from Everest after faking a summit of the world`s highest mountain has successfully scaled the peak for real, saying he returned to `prove` himself.
• Narender Singh Yadav claimed to have reached the top of the 8,849-metre mountain in May 2016.
• But photos of the 26-year-old at the summit were later shown to have been digitally altered, prompting the Nepal government to revoke recognition of his feat.
• Yadav and two other climbers were issued a six-year ban backdated to 2016, and this was the first year he was able to return to the mountain
