6. N. Korea fires ballistic missiles, prompting joint military drill by Japan, US

• North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast on June 5, 2022, likely its largest single test, a day after South Korea and the United States ended joint military drills.
• South Korea`s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that at least eight missiles were fired from the Sunan area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang and they flew between 110 km-600 km at altitudes between 25 km to 90 km.
• In response to North Korea`s missiles launch, Japan`s Self Defence Force issued a statement that Japan and the United States had conducted a joint military exercise

• The drive for a `New Kazakhstan` in the wake of the violence has come from the man that Nazarbayev handpicked to replace him as president in 2019, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
• Tokayev, 69, describes the snap referendum as a shift from `super-presidential` rule that will strengthen parliament


8. US-backed group suggests Syria use air defences against Turkey

• The US-baclced Syrian Democratic Forces would coordinate with Syrian government troops to fend off any Turkish invasion of the north, the SDF commander said on June 5, 2022, adding Damascus should use its air defence systems against Turkish planes.
• Ankara has vowed a new offensive on swathes of northern Syria controlled by the SDF, a Kurdish-led alliance that is spearheaded by the Kurdish People`s Protection Units (YPG).
• The new threats have highlighted the complex web of ties in northern Syria: while Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organisation, Syrian Kurdish forces are backed by Washington and have also coordinated with Syria`s government and its ally Russia


9. Blasts from Russian missile strikes rock Kyiv

• Russia struck Ukraine`s capital Kyiv with missiles early on Sunday for the first time in more than a month, while Ukrainian officials said a counter-attack on the main battlefield in the east had retaken half of the city of Sievierodonetsk.
• Dark smoke could be seen from many miles away after the attack on two outlying districts of Kyiv. Ukraine said the strike hit a rail car repair works. Moscow said it had destroyed tanks sent by Eastern European countries to Ukraine

• Rafael Nadal won a 14th French Open and record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title on June 5, 2022 with a straight-sets rout of Casper Ruud to become the oldest male champion at Roland Garros and he vowed to `keep fighting` In a disappointing final, 36-year-old Nadal won 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 with victory coming 17 years to the day since he claimed his first French Open as a 19-year-old in 2005.
• Nadal won the last 11 games of the final and is now two Slams ahead of old rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer with Sunday`s victory coming against all the odds.
• Nadal, the oldest winner in Paris since a 34-year-old Andre Gime no in 1972, had not been certain of taking part after a chronic left foot injury, which has plagued him through out his career, nared up again
