6. PSX joins UN-backed SSE initiative

• The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) said on June 6, 2022 it has joined the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative, which is a partnership programme organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN Global Compact, UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI) and Principles for Responsible Investment.
• A press release said the SSE initiative`s goal is the capacity building of stock exchanges and securities market regulators around the world to promote responsible investment in sustainable development and help improve corporate performance on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, including the financing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals


7. Global crisis must not delay climate action, UN talks told

• Negotiators from almost 200 countries met in Germany on June 6, 2022 for climate talks tasked with reigniting momentum on tackling global warming, as Russia`s invasion of Ukraine overshadows the threat from rising emissions.
• The conference will set the stage for a fresh round of major United Nations talks later this year in Egypt.
• It will also be a chance to test the resolve of nations facing a catalogue of crises, including escalating climate impacts, geopolitical tensions, bloodshed in Ukraine and the threat of a devastating global food crisis.
• Issuing a call for international unity to hold firm, outgoing UN climate change chief Patricia Espinosa told delegates it was `not acceptable to say that we are in challenging times`


8. S. Korea, US fire missiles after tests by North

• South Korea and the United States fired eight ballistic missiles on June 6, 2022 in response to North Korean weapons tests the previous day, Seoul`s military said.
• The Joint Chief s of Staff said the allies launched the ground-to-ground Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) at targets in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, in the early morning.
• The 10-minute volley comes a day after North Korea launched eight short-range ballistic missiles following a South Korea-US joint military exercise involving a US aircraft carrier.
• `Our military strongly condemns the North`s series of ballistic missile provocations and sternly urges it to immediately stop acts that raise military tensions on the peninsula,` the Joint Chiefs of Staff added


9. Johnson wins leadership challenge

• British Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a confidence vote on June 6, 2022, seeing off a challenge to his leadership brought by lawmakers within his Conservative Party.
• Johnson won the vote 211 to 148, according to Graham Brady, chairman of the party committee that oversaw the ballot.
• Johnson earlier defended his record on delivering Brexit, fighting the Covid pandemic and Britain`s hawkish support for Ukraine against Russia.
• `This is not the moment for a leisurely and entirely unforced domestic political drama and months and months of vacillation from the UK,` he told Tory MPs, according to a senior party source.


10. US, Europe may seek to censure Iran amid stalled nuclear talks

• Major European countries and the United States are expected to seek to censure Iran as the UN atomic watchdog started meeting on Monday with talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal stalled.
• The resolution drafted by the United States, Britain, France and Germany is a sign of their growing impatience as diplomats warn the window to save the landmark agreement is closing. The International Atomic Energy Agency`s Board of Governors meets on Monday through Friday in Vienna. If the resolution urging Iran to `cooperate fully` with the IAEA is adopted, it will be the first motion censuring Iran since June 2020
