6. UN body rebukes Israel for seeking `complete control`

• An independent commission of inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council after last year`s Gaza conflict said Israel must do more than end the occupation of land Palestinians want for a state, according to a report released on Tuesday.
• Israel`s ministry of foreign affairs called the report `a waste of money and effort` that amounted to a witch-hunt. Israel boycotted the inquiry, accusing it of bias and barred entry to its investigators.
• While prompted by the 11-day May 2021 conflict in which 250 Gaza Palestinians and 13 people in Israel died, the inquiry mandate includes alleged human rights abuses before and after that and seeks to investigate the `root causes` of the tensions


7. Moscow claims it`s in `full control` of Severodonetsk

• Russia claimed on June 7, 2022 that its forces had taken full control of residential neighbourhoods in Ukraine`s flashpoint city of Severodonetsk, af ter Kyiv said its troops were fighting on in the key eastern hub despite being outnumbered.
• Amid stark warnings of global food shortages partly blamed on the war, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Turkiye to discuss `security corridors` for Ukrainian grain to leave the country.
• `The residential areas of the city of Severodonetsk have been fully liberated,` Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said


8. Turkiye tells Russia it won`t tolerate instability in northern Syria

• Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar told Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in a call on June 7, 2022 that his country would respond to moves aimed at disrupting stability in northern Syria, his office said, as Ankara gears for talks with Moscow ahead of an expected offensive in the region.
• President Tayyip Erdogan announced two weeks ago that Turkiye would soon be launching military offensives into northern Syria against the Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara considers a terrorist organisation.
• Russian and Turkish foreign ministers will hold talks in Ankara on Wednesday


9. Western states submit censure motion against Tehran to IAEA

• The United States, Britain, France and Germany have submitted a motion to the UN atomic energy watchdog to censure Iran over its lack of cooperation with the agency, two diplomats said on June 7, 2022.
• `The text was submitted overnight` from Monday to Tuesday, a European diplomat said. A second diplomat confirmed the news.
• The resolution urging Iran to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) marks the first time since June 2020 when a similar motion censuring Iran was adopted


10. World Cup trophy returns to Pakistan, heightening the sense of longing for football resumption

• The FIFA World Cup trophy returned to Lahore. As did Christian Karembeu. And just like four years ago, when it made its first trip to Pakistan, the country remains a pariah for international football.
• Pakistan has been under FIFA suspension since April last year, a prolongation of the crisis the country`s football has faced since 2015. Since the last visit of the World Cup trophy, the national team has played just seven international matches. Two of those matches put Pakistan out of the qualifying race for this year`s World Cup in Qatar, for which the Trophy Tour is being held.
• Pakistan was one of 51 countries the iconic gold trophy will visit on its quadrennial tour and amid a smattering of fireworks, Karembeu, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, unveiled it to a small gathering at a plush hotel on Tuesday, unlike four years ago when over 10,000 members of the public got an opportunity to see it
