6. Turkey jails 16 journalists over propaganda charges

• A Turkish court imprisoned pending trial 16 Kurdish journalists and media workers who were arrested after being detained last week accused of spreading terrorist propaganda, the Media and Law Studies Association and local media said on June 16, 2022.
• They had been kept in custody for eight days in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir without being formally accused, with prosecutors twice requesting an extension, they reported.
• Five other journalists that were detained on June 8 were not imprisoned, according to Demiroren and other Turkish media


7. US renames Saudi embassy street after Khashoggi

• The renaming of the street in front of the Saudi embassy as Jamal Khashoggi Way sends a strong signal to the US President Joe Biden many among its supporters are unhappy with his planned visit to the kingdom next month.
• `Today we officially unveil Jamal Khashoggi Way, Washington D.C. Council chair Phil Mendelson said in a tweet posted on Thursday, a day after the renaming ceremony held outside the embassy`s main entrance.
• The ceremony was held on Wednesday at 1:14pm symbolising the time Khashoggi, a Saudi human rights activist and journalist was last seen before his death on October 2, 2018, in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul


8. WTO reaches initial deal

• Major members of the World Trade Organisation reached an initial deal on June 16, 2022, winning over India which said it was confident more global accords could be achieved as negotiations on fishing, vaccines and food security entered their final hours.
• Ministers from more than 100 countries convened at the global trade watchdog`s headquarters in Geneva this week for the first time in more than four years to agree new trade rules, a feat many thought unlikely in an era of high geopolitical tensions.
• The body`s 164 members must all agree for new rules to pass, meaning that one member alone can block deals.
• During the June 12-15 meeting, extended into the evening of a fifth day on Thursday, that member has been India

• The European Union`s most powerful leaders on June 16, 2022 embraced Ukraine`s bid to be accepted as a candidate for EU membership, in a powerful symbol of support in Kyiv`s battle against Russia`s invasion.
• French President Emmanuel Macron, Germany`s Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian premier Mario Draghi arrived in Ukraine by train and headed to the Kyiv suburb of Irpin, scene of fierce battles early in the brutal war.
• They were later joined in Kyiv by Romania`s President Klaus Iohannis and met their Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been lobbying his western allies for most and faster weapons deliveries and the promise of a European future


10. US coalition forces capture top IS operative in Syria

• US coalition forces said they captured a senior militant Islamic State group bomb maker in a pre-dawn raid on June 16, 2022 that, witnesses said, saw troops in helicopters swoop down on an isolated house in rebel-held northwestern Syria.
• A war monitor and AFP correspondents said two military helicopters touched down for only a few minutes, and several shots were fired, in a village in an area controlled by Turkish backed rebel groups.
• `The captured individual is an experienced bomb maker and operational facilitator who became one of the top leaders of Daesh`s Syrian branch,` said the US-led coalition battling the jihadist group in Syria and Iraq, using another name for IS
