1. WHO urges two-week lockdown, more tests

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Pakistan has been ranked among the top 10 countries in the world reporting the highest number of new cases of Covid-19 and advised the government to enhance daily testing capacity to 50,000 to assess the actual prevalence of coronavirus across the country.
• While expressing concern over the hasty lifting of restrictions, the WHO in a letter to the four provinces stated Pakistan did not meet any of the prerequisites for opening of the lockdown.
• It also alerted Pakistan to its high positivity rate, underlining seriousness of the Covid-19 situation and poor efforts of the government in this regard.


2. Pakistan renews efforts for intra-Afghan dialogue

• Pakistan on June 9, 2020 assured Kabul of its support for peace in Afghanistan as it renewed its efforts for facilitating the long elusive intra-Afghan dialogue.
• Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa paid a previously unannounced trip to Kabul along with newly appointed special envoy for Afghanistan Muhammad Sadiq and ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed. It was Gen Bajwa`s first foreign trip since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, which itself underscored the importance of the trip.
• The visit took place ahead of the expected commencement of a dialogue between Taliban and other Afghan factions, including the Ashraf Ghani-led government over a political settlement of the long-running conflict.


3. Emirates resumes flights from Pakistan after two months

• After a gap of over two months, Emirates has resumed scheduled services from Pakistan while ensuring implementation of measures for the health and safety of its customers and employees at all contact points.
• As the airline will operate seven flights from Karachi, five from Lahore and two from Islamabad to Dubai every week, the first scheduled flight of Emirates will take off from the federal capital on Thursday.
• The flight operations had remained suspended over the past two months amid travel restrictions imposed globally due to the Covid-19 outbreak


4. Punjab Assembly passed The Punjab Curriculum and Text Book Board (Amendment) Bill 2020

• Punjab Assembly on June 9, 2020 unanimously passed The Punjab Curriculum and Text Book Board (Amendment) Bill 2020. After the passage of the private bill presented by PML-Q’s Khadeeja Umar, contents relating to Islam will not be published in textbooks without prior approval from Muttahida Ulema Board Punjab. Expressing displeasure over absence of Minister for Food Abdul Aleem Khan and unsatisfactory replies from the parliamentary secretary,
• Besides taking up resolutions on agenda during private business, the House approved legislation aimed at checking inclusion of objectionable material in textbooks. Islamic content of history, Urdu literature and other subjects will not be published in textbooks until Muttahida Ulema Board Punjab approves, according to the bill.


5. Punjab Cabinet Committee on Law okays several amendments

• The 27th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Business was held at the Civil Secretariat under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister for Law and Social Welfare Raja Basharat on June 9, 2020 in which several proposals for important legal amendments, including amendments in rules, were approved.
• The Committee approved the proposal to amend the Punjab Leave Rules 1981 for Punjab Government Employees and the proposal to levy property tax on non-agricultural land abutting to national and provincial highways and Motorways outside the rating area fixed by the Excise and Taxation Department. In another proposal, the recommendations for Resource Mobilization Finance Committee 2019/20 were approved


6. No gathering of world leaders at UN in September: UNGA president

• For the first time in United Nations’ 75-year history, world leaders will not come to New York this September for the annual session of UN General Assembly due to the coronavirus pandemic, the president of the 193-member assembly has said.
• In the first 10 days of the session, the leaders traditionally come face-to-face to debate key international issues on the assembly’s agenda. Last year, 146 heads of state/government, including Prime Minister Imran khan, participated.
• “World leaders cannot come to New York because they cannot come as single individuals. A president doesn’t travel alone. We don’t expect, therefore, to have presidents here,” Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the president, told a virtual news conference Monday. But Tijjani Muhammad-Bande said that he hopes to announce in the next two weeks how the 193 heads of state and government will give their speeches on pressing local and world issues during the assembly’s High-level General Debate.


7. North Korea cuts communication lines to South

• North Korea is severing all official communication links with the South, it announced June 9, 2020 in a move analysts said was aimed at manufacturing a crisis on the divided peninsula.
• Since last week the North has issued a series of vitriolic denunciations of the South over activists sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets over the border something defectors do on a regular basis.
• In recent days authorities in the North have organised large-scale rallies across the country of citizens pledging their support, with inter-Korean ties at a standstill despite three summits between the North`s leader Kim Jong Un and the South`s President Moon Jae-in in 2018.


8. China removes pangolin from traditional medicine list

• China has removed pangolin parts from its official list of traditional medicines, state media reported on June 9, 2020, days after increasing legal protections on the endangered animal.
• Pangolins were left out of the official Chinese Pharmacopoeia this year, along with substances including a pill formulated with bat faeces, the state-owned Health Times reponed.
• The pangolin, the world`s most heavily trafficked mammal, is thought by some scientists to be the possible host of the novel coronavirus that emerged at a market in China`s Wuhan city last year


9. Master batsman Younis Khan named Pakistan`s batting coach for England tour

• Pakistan`s most prolific Test middle-order batsman Younis Khan and wrist spinner Mushtaq Ahmad have been appointed as batting and spin bowling coaches respectively for the next month`s tour of England, the PCB announced on June 9, 2020.
• However, the timing of the appointment of both the coaches is a bit surprising. One wonders what was the real hurry since the PCB is yet to seek the permission of the tour from the government.
• Younis`s appointment is no doubt a good move and will benefit the national team since the current lot of Pakistani batsmen need a boost and definite guidance from an experienced player which is likely to be provided by the high profile righthander.


10. ICC approves interim regulation changes

• The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations which include the ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball and allowing home umpires in international series.
• The ICC Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) ratified recommendations from the Anil Kumble Cricket Committee, aimed at mitigating the risks posed by the COVID-19 virus and protect the safety of players and match officials when cricket resumes, said a statement of the ICC on June 9, 2020.
• Following are the approved interim changes to its playing regulations, COVID-19 Replacements: Teams will be allowed to replace players displaying symptoms of COVID-19 during a Test match. In line with concussion replacements, the Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement. However, the regulation for COVID-19 replacements will not be applicable in ODIs and T20Is
