1. Tarin hints at major hike in levy on oil products

• Hinting at a significant increase in levy on petroleum products next fiscal, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin on June 12, 2021 said an understanding had been reached with Saudi Arabia for revival of its oil facility on deferred payments `We will have to increase petroleum levy, take it up to Rs20 per litre,` he said while speaking at his post-budget news conference but hastened to add that the government would wait because of expectations about lifting of US sanctions against Iran and resultant drop in international prices that would be retained.
• At present, there is Rs4 to Rs5 per litre levy on petrol and diesel


2. S. Arabia allows 60,000 residents, no foreigner, for Haj

• Saudi Arabia announced on June 12, 2021 it would allow 60,000 residents vaccinated against Covid-19 to perform this year`s Haj, but Muslims from abroad would be barred for a second straight year.
• The Haj typically packs millions of pilgrims into congested religious sites and could be a major source of contagion amid the coronavirus pandemic.
• This year it would be `open for nationals and residents of the kingdom, limited to 60,000 pilgrims` the Haj ministry said, quoted by the official Saudi Press Agency. The pilgrimage, scheduled to be held in July, would be limited to those who have been vaccinated and are aged 18-65 with no chronic illnesses, it said.


3. NCOC puts travel bar on people from 26 countries

• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on June 12, 2021 placed strict restrictions on travellers from 26 countries including India, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Indonesia and South Africa by placing them in C category.
• In a separate development, the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals has fallen by around 60 per cent, with the positivity ratio remaining below 4pc.An official of the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) said Pakistan had introduced three categories to deal with Covid-19. He said: `Countries in A category are exempted from the mandatory Covid-19 test, travellers from areas in B category require a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test that must be taken within 72 hours of the travel date while countries in C category are restricted and people can travel only under specific NCOC guidelines


4. G7 rivals China with infrastructure plan

• The Group of Seven richest democracies on Saturday sought to counter China`s growing influence by offering developing nations an infrastructure plan that would rival President Xi Jinping`s multitrillion-dollar Belt and Road initiative.
• The G7, whose leaders are meeting in southwestern England, has been searching for a coherent response to the growing assertiveness of Xi after China`s surging economic and military rise over the past 40 years.
• US President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders hope their plan, known as the Build Back Better World (B3W) initiative, will provide a transparent infrastructure partnership to help narrow the $40 trillion needed by developing nations by 2035, the White House said


5. Azerbaijan hands over 15 POWs to Armenia

• Azerbaijan on June 13, 2021 handed over to Armenia 15 prisoners of war captured during last year`s hostilities over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, the foreign ministry in Baku said.
• The ministry also said that under the deal mediated by Georgia`s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Yerevan reciprocated by providing Baku with maps of minefields in the conflict zone.
• Fighting broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia in September 2020 over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, claiming some 6,000 lives over six weeks


6. IMF approves $772 million credit for Angola

• The International Monetary Fund has approved the immediate disbursement of $772 million to Angola as part of a three-year arrangement signed in 2018 to reform its economy.
• It was the final tranche of a $3.7 billion facility granted to the southern African nation to improve governance and diversify its economy to promote sustainable, private sector-led economic growth, the Fund said in a statement.
• The Fund’s board also approved an extension of the country’s debt service moratorium until the end of December 2021


7. Oil spill nears Corsica coast

• French officials were racing June 122, 2021 to minimise the environmental impact of an oil spill approaching eastern Corsica, with two Navy boats armed with clean-up equipment heading to the Mediterranean island.
• “We fear that part of this pollution will reach the Corsican coast soon,” Maritime official Christine Ribbe told AFP. Two Naval ships, equipped with “anti-pollution material and specialised staff”, were steaming to Corsica from their base in Toulon, Southern France. Some 80 members of the security forces and rescue services are also being drafted in to aid with the clean-up if the oil reaches the coast, local authorities said


8. WHO presents anti-tobacco award 2021 to Cambodia

• The World Health Organization (WHO) has given a World No Tobacco Day Award 2021 to Cambodia for its efforts to control tobacco use.
• WHO representative to Cambodia Li Ailan on Friday presented the award to Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bunheng at a ceremony held in capital Phnom Penh.
• Li congratulated Cambodia on its continued efforts to control tobacco use, saying that effective tobacco control measures would help reduce poverty and enhance people’s health and wealth.


9. Peshawar trounce Quetta by 61 runs

• The Quetta Gladiators all but made an ignominious exit from the playoffs race in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 after Peshawar Zalmi completed a convincing victory by a margin of 61 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on June 12, 2021 night.
• Chasing a tall target of 198, Quetta began their chase on a promising note through a partnership of 62 between Usman (28 off 23 balls) and Saim Ayub who had been drafted into the playing XI as a concussion replacement for Faf du Plessis before the familiar rot set in for the 2019 PSL champions, who slumped to a sorry-looking 136-9. It was their sixth loss in seven matches of this PSL


10. Krejcikova wins French Open title, dedicates triumph to Novotna

• Barbora Krejcikova won her maiden Grand Slam singles title at the French Open on June 12, 2021, beating Russia`s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to become the first Czech woman in 40 years to conquer Roland Garros and dedicated her victory to former Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna who died four years ago.
• Krejcikova, ranked 33 in the world and playing just her fifth main draw in a Slams singles event, triumphed 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 for a second career title.
• The 25-year-old emulates compatriot Hana Mandlikova who claimed the trophy in Paris in 1981
