1. Govt identifies virus hotspots in 20 cities

• As Pakistan records 120 deaths the highest ever number of fatalities from novel coronavirus in a day during the past 24 hours, the government has announced that 20 cities have been identified as potential Covid-19 hotspots/clusters where restrictive measures are needed to contain the virus in line with the prime minister`s smart lockdown policy.
• During the past 24 hours, the country reported 4,634 Covid-19 cases and 120 deaths, taking the national tally of cases to 146,863 and fatalities to 2,783.
• Of the 20 cities, six are in Sindh (Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Ghotki, Larkana and Khairpur), eight in Punjab(Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujarat, Multan, Gujranwala and Dera Ghazi Khan), four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Swat, Malakand and Mardan), besides Balochistan capital Quetta and federal capital Islamabad


2. Rs56bn tax relief for small businesses in Punjab budget

• Facing an uncertain income stream amid surging number of Covid-19 infections and deaths across Punjab, the Usman Buzdar government`s Rs2,240.7bn budget for the next financial year announced on June 15, 2020 proposed to modestly increase development and current spending, including coronavirus-related expenditure of Rs50bn, give significant tax relief of Rs56bn to small businesses affected by the pandemic outbreak, encourage digitisation and documentation of the economy, and, at the same time, produce a cash surplus of Rs125bn to hold down the federal fiscal deficit.
• Hours before Punjab Finance Minister Makhdum H ashim JawanBakht read out his third budget speech, the provincial health authorities announced enforcing lockdown in several areas of Lahore with 300 or more infections each to halt the spread of the disease. By Monday evening, Punjab reported more than 54,000 infections as it became the first province where the number of Covid-19deaths crossed the 1,000 mark.
• The budget documents show allocation of Rs68.3bn for Covid-19 mitigation expenditure, including Rs35bn for 20 per cent of the existing healthcare workers, Rs10bn for new recruitments to overcome the shortage of caregivers, tax relief of Rs10bn and block allocation of Rs13bn for any emergency expenditure.


3. Punjab increases development budget by 9.42pc

• Punjab government on June 15, 2020 announced the Annual Development Programme (ADP) worth Rs337 billion, up by 9.42 per cent from Rs308bn last year, for the fiscal year 202021 with a focus on economic stimulus in the backdrop of Covid-19.
• Provincial budget documents showed that 29pc of the ADP will go to the social sector, followed by 23pc to infrastructure development, 14pc to special initiatives, 13pc for services sector, 5pc for production sector and15pcforothers.
• Of the total ADP, 35pc has been earmarked for 11 districts of south Punjab `to uplift the living standard of people of the area as well as to improve the socio-economic indicators`. These funds have been ring-fenced and will not be diverted unlike in the past


4. Punjab govt allocates Rs391b for education sector

• The Punjab government allocated more than Rs 391 billion for the education sector for fiscal year 2020-21. The allocations include Rs 357 billion for ongoing regular expenditures, and Rs 34.5 billion for development schemes. According to the budget document, funds amounting to Rs 350 billion have been allocated for School Education Department (SED), of which Rs 27.6 billion has been earmarked as development budget for the year.
• For ongoing schemes, Rs 600 million have been allocated for SED whereas four billion rupees for new schemes. Similarly, Rs 23 billion has been allocated for other development programme (ODP).
• Provision of scholarships to more than Rs 0.5 million school girls and free syllabus books to all students would be made from this allocation.


5. Pakistan to start making COVID-19 diagnostic kits locally

• Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhary Fawad Hussain said that Pakistan will start commercial manufacturing of COVID-19 diagnostic kits soon, and Pakistan has already received 100 million US dollar export orders of PPEs.
• In a serious of tweets, federal minister claimed that, “French Newspaper is all praise for made in Pakistan masks, Pak has already received 100 M USD export orders of PPEs and we expect this figure to cross 500 M USD in coming months.”
• Earlier, in an interveiw he said Pakistan has developed indigenous COVID-19 diagnostic kits that have been approved by Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan for commercial use. Mr Hussain further said the locally manufactured diagnostic kits would considerably bring down the cost of coronavirus tests in the country


6. Sindh Assembly adopts unanimous resolution on finality of Prophethood

• The Sindh Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution asking the authorities for making it mandatory to write `Khatim-un-Nabiyyeen` (Last Prophet) along with name of Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in official documents, books and wherever the holy name was used.
• The resolution was tabled by Mohammad Hussain Khan of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan.
• He said that since the finality of Prophethood was part of the Muslim faith, `Khatim-un-Nabiyyeen` should be written and pronounced in official documents, newspapers, magazines, television, radio and wherever this holy name was used


7. Russia convicts American of spying, outrages US

• The United States expressed outrage on June 15, 2020 over a Russian court`s conviction of American Paul Whelan on espionage charges, saying he was deprived of a fair trial.
• Whelan, a former Marine arrested in December 2018, was sentenced on Monday to 16 years of hard labor after being found guilty of receiving classified information.
• `The United States is outraged by the decision of a Russian court today to convict US citizen Paul Whelan after a secret trial, with secret evidence, and without appropriate allowances for defense witnesses,` US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.


8. Britain finds wreckage but not pilot of US F-15 jet

• Britain`s coastguard said on Monday it had located the wreckage of a US Air Force fighter jet that crashed during a training mission in the North Sea but the pilot was still missing.
• The F-15C Eagle went down after taking off from the RAF Lakenheath base near the town of Milden hall in eastern England.
• The base is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, which has operated from there since 1960 and has more than 4,500 active-duty military members


9. European states reopen borders after three months

• European countries reopened borders on June 15, 2020 after a three-month coronavirus shutdown, although international visitors are still being kept away and there was uncertainty over whether many Europeans will quickly embrace travel outside their home countries.
• The virus is far from being wiped out, and the need for constant vigilance came into sharp focus again as China, where Covid-19 first emerged last year, rushed to contain an outbreak in Beijing.
• Germany and France dropped border checks nearly two weeks after Italy opened its frontiers. Greece welcomed visitors on Monday with passengers on flights from other European countries not having to undergo compulsory coronavirus tests


10. PCB announces ambitious 5-year strategic development plan

• With no significant achievement during the last 20 months after being elected for a three-year term in 2018, the incumbent management of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) headed by Ehsan Mani announced on June 15, 2020 an ambitious development plan for five years (2019-2023).
• Titled `Five-Year Plan to Inspire and Unify Our Nation`, the document lays down strategic and corporate objectives, sets a course of action for the progress and enhancement of the national men`s, women`s and age-group teams and presents a pathway and structure for grassroots development.
• Underpinning the objectives will be a tracking system that will ensure that progress is monitored on a monthly basis throughout the duration of the plan
