1. AstraZeneca can now be given to people over 18 years

• Keeping in view the inconvenience being faced by people intending to travel abroad, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has amended its guidelines on the use of AstraZeneca vaccine to facilitate them.
• Under the new guidelines, people over the age of 18 years can now be administered AstraZeneca.
• Earlier, those aged above 40 years were eligible to receive the vaccine.
• On the other hand, Pakistan recorded 838 positive cases, the lowest number detected in the last seven months.


2. Sindh presents Rs1,477.9bn tax-free budget

• Amid strong protest by the whistle-blowing members of three major opposition parties, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presented in the Sindh Assembly on June 15, 2021 a Rs1,477.9 billion tax free budget with a development outlay of Rs329bn.
• He said the economic meltdown due to Covid-19 and inflation had severely affected the lives of ordinary citizens. `We are sensitive to the hardships being faced by the common man and it was against this background that we stretched our resources and rolled out interventions that could provide some immediate relief,` he said, adding: `We began some programmes for empowering the vulnerable sections of our society to gradually move towards `inclusive growth`


3. Sindh to spend Rs329bn on development

• The Sindh government has unveiled Rs329 billion Annual Development Programme (ADP) for 2021-22, which is more than double the revised ADP of the outgoing fiscal year.
• The government argued that the downward revision for the ongoing fiscal year was due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic which damaged the economic environment, hit revenue receipts and created joblessness on large scale in the province.
• The development expenditure of the province was estimated at Rs329.032 billion, which includes Rs222.5bn for the Provincial ADP and Rs30bn for Districts ADP, foreign project assistance of Rs71.16bn and Rs.5.4bn from Federal PSDP Grant for schemes being executed by the Sindh government.


4. E-waste poses health threat to Pakistanis, says UN study

• Pakistan is among 15 countries where electronic (e) waste dismantling and recycling is considered a major health hazard, says a UN report released on June 15, 2021.
• India, however, is among the three countries where thee-waste recycling is most prominent. Brazil and China are the other two.
• All three major South Asian nations India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are among the worst affected by the e-waste


5. Steel-cutting ceremony of corvette for Navy held

• The steel-cutting ceremony of fourth Milgem-class corvette for Pakistan Navy was held at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW) here on June 15, 2021.
• Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Amjad Khan Niazi graced the occasion as chief guest. The event marked a milestone in the construction schedule for the fourth Milgem-class corvette for the navy.
• Pakistan Navy has signed a contract with M/s Asfat for construction of four corvettes out of which two are being constructed at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard and the remaining two at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works


6. China accuses NATO of inflating `threat theory`

• Beijing on June 15, 2021 accused NATO of exaggerating the threat from China and `creating confrontation`, after a vow from the Western allies to work together to counter the `systemic challenges` posed by its policies.
• NATO leaders made the commitment on Monday, as US President Joe Biden renewed Washington`s transatlantic ties at his first summit with the allies.
• In a broad statement of intent, the leaders said China`s increasingly assertive actions in building a nuclear arsenal and space and cyber warfare capabilities threatened the international order


7. Vietnam`s pangolin defender wins top environmental prize

• A Vietnamese conservationist working to save pangolins from the devastating multi-billion-dollar wildlife trade won a prestigious award on June 15, 2021 for his role in rescuing over a thousand of one of the world`s most endangered creatures.
• Highly prized in China and southeast Asia for their flesh, pangolins are seen as a delicacy for the mistaken belief that they can cure anything from impotence to cancer.
• Nguyen Van Thai, director of Save Vietnam`s Wildlife (SVW), has been at the forefront of efforts to raise the alarm internationally about the serious problems Vietnam faces as a major hub for wildlife trafficking.


8. Najia Rasool wins bronze at Asian taekwondo poomsae event

• Pakistan`s female athlete Najia Rasool produced a fine performance to win bronze medal in the Asian Taekwondo Poomsae, Over-17 Women Individual Freestyle category.
• `Our coaches trained us with the latest rules and regulations for this event. Taekwondo talent in Pakistan has way too much potential which needs grooming and can result in more medals in the future,` said Najia.
• Korea`s Sangyoop Kim and the Philippines Juvenile Crisostomo won gold and silver, respectively.


9. Pace is ace as Gladiators bounce back to shock Qalandars

• Former champions Quetta Gladiators kept themselves alive in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 after clinching a remarkable come from-behind 18-run triumph against Lahore Qalandars at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
• The only way Quetta could still make the playoff s is if both holders Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans lose all their remaining games a scenario which is most unlikely to happen -particularly given the good form of Multan whom Quetta face on Wednesday before winding up their league campaign versus Karachi three days later. On top of it all, Quetta`s net run rate will also hurt them quite hard


10. Peshawar walk over Karachi, land champions in a hole

• Peshawar Zalmi handed Karachi Kings a demoralising six-wicket defeat in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night after restricting the holders to their lowest ever team score.
• From the outset, Karachi had no hope of stopping Peshawar from sealing a deserved berth in the playoff s while raising prospects of finishing among the top two teams who will straightaway clash in the Qualifier with the losers still remaining in contention for the final as they moved into second spot behind Islamabad United.
