1. Senate polls be held through secret ballot, rules SC

• Two days before the March 3 Senate polls, the Supreme Court on March 1, 2021 ruled that elections for the upper house of parliament have to be conducted through secret ballot as required under the Constitution.
• The four-to-one majority opinion on a presidential reference was interpreted by both the government and the opposition in their favour. However, Justice Yahya Afridi in his minority opinion held that the presidential reference was not a point of law and be rejected.
• The detailed reasons of both opinions will be issued later.


2. 180,000 senior citizens registered for vaccination

• As the government`s Covid-19 vaccination campaign for over 65-year-old citizens is set to start this week, only 180,000 (2.25 per cent) of around eight million senior citizens in the country have registered themselves for inoculation so far.
• The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has described it as a slow response, considering that there are around eight million people above 65 years of age in Pakistan.


3. Heer Ranjha star Ejaz Durrani passes away

• Popular veteran film hero, Ejaz Durrani, passed away here at the age of 86.
• Having acted in over 150 Urdu and Punjabi films, Ejaz became a household name with the iconic `Heer Ranjha` wherein he was paired with the late Firdous.
• Ejaz`s funeral was held at Garden Town`s Ahmed Block Mosque on March 2, 2021 and he was laid to rest at Miyani Sahib graveyard.His gul will be held on Tuesday (today) at his Garden Town residence. He is survived by six daughters and a widow


4. Fourth international PATS competition kicks off

• Fourth International Pakistan Army Team Spirit (PATS) Competition-2021 commenced at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Pabbi, near Kharian, on March 2, 2021.
• Besides eight domestic teams of the Pakistan Army, teams from eight allied countries were also participating in the competition, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.
• The teams from Jordan, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Uzbekistan will take part as participants, whereas Morocco, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan will be participating as observers in the three-day competition.


5. MoU signed with Suparco to get clearer picture of glacier lakes

• The Ministry of Climate Change and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission on March 2, 2021 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for use of satellite imagery received by Suparco to mitigate the effects of climate change in the country.
• Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the MoU will provide an overall clearer picture of the current glacial lakes and associated threats.
• Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change Joudat Ayaz, who is also the national project director of GLOF-II, and Suparco director Brig Tahir Islam signed the MoU


6. Elements within Afghanistan cause most civilian casualties: UN report

• Cross-border incidents attributed to forces in Pakistan caused less than two percent of civilian casualties in Afghanistan from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2020, says the latest UN report on the war-ravaged country.
• The report, prepared by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and released last week, attributed 62 per cent of all civilian casualties to anti-government elements within Afghanistan


7. US destroyer docks in Sudan for first time in 30 years

• A US naval destroyer docked on Sudan`s Red Sea coast on March 2, 2021 in the latest sign of thawing relations between Washington and Khartoum, a day after a visit by a Russian frigate.
• The visits are a sign of international competition for influence in Sudan, which sits in a volatile region bridging the Horn of Africa, the Gulf, and North Africa, following the 2019 overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al Bashir.


8. First UAE envoy to Israel takes up post

• Israel`s president on March 2, 2021 formally received the first-ever ambassador from the United Arab Emirates to the Jewish state, following last year`s agreement between the countries to normalise ties.
• Mohamed Al Khaja, the UAE envoy, arrived in Israel on Monday, delivered his credentials to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin at a ceremony in Jerusalem.
• After greeting Khaja in Arabic, Rivlin said `The entire Israeli people welcomes you with joy


9. `Nomadland` makes Globes history as virtual gala honours late Boseman

• `Nomadland` made Golden Globes history on March 1, 2021 as Chloe Zhao became the first female director to win the awards` top prize for best drama, putting her film about marginalised Americans roaming the West in vans into Oscars pole position.
• Zhao also bagged the best director Globe, making her only the second woman to do so in the history of Hollywood`s traditional awards season opener, which was a mainly virtual ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic.


10. Former French president convicted of graft

• Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption on March 2, 2021 and handed a three-year prison sentence, in a ruling that deals a major blow to any lingering political ambitions.
• The sentence includes two years suspended and the remaining one year would be converted into a non-custodial sentence, meaning it is unlikely Sarkozy will end up behind bars over this case
