• President Vladimir Putin on March 5, 2022 dismissed concerns that some sort of martial law or emergency situation could be declared in Russia.
• Putin`s comment followed days of speculation that the introduction of martial law could be imminent.
• He said such a measure was imposed only when there was significant internal or external threat. `We don`t plan to introduce any kind of special regime on Russian territory there is currently no need,` Putin said


7. In a first, woman becomes judge of key Egyptian court

• Radwa Helmi made history on March 5, 2022 as the first woman judge to sit on the bench of Egypt`s State Council, a top court in the Arab country.
• Helmi, making her appearance in a Cairo courthouse, was among 98 women appointed last year to join the council, one of Egypt`s main judicial bodies, following a decision by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
• `The 5th of March has become a new historical day for Egyptian women,` said the head of the National Council for Women (NCW), Maya Morsi.
• The move came ahead of the March 8 International Women`s Day


8. Moscow threatens to stonewall Iran deal over sanctions

• In an effort to safeguard its trade and business interests in the face of tough sanctions imposed on it after its invasion of Ukraine, Russia on March 5, 2022 sought guarantees from the US before committing to supporting the proposed Iran nuclear deal.
• The statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the guarantees his government was seeking poured cold water on the prospects of an early revival of Tehran`s 2015 nuclear deal.
• Commenting on the announcement by Russia, which could torpedo months of intensive indirect talks between Tehran and Washington in Vienna, an Iranian official said: `Russians had put this demand on the table (at the Vienna talks) since two days ago.
• There is an understanding that by changing its position in Vienna talks Russia wants to secure its interests in other places. This move is not constructive for Vienna nuclear talks,` said the Iranian official in Tehran


9. Fighting resumes as efforts for Ukraine ceasefire fail

• Russia`s defence ministry said on March 5, 2022 it had resumed `offensive actions` in Ukraine after announcing a ceasefire earlier in the day to allow residents of two besieged cities to evacuate.
• However, Ukrainian officials said Russian artillery fire and air strikes had prevented residents from leaving before the agreed-to evacuations got under way.
• President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of sabotaging the effort and claimed the actions of Ukraine`s leadership `called into question the country`s future as an independent state`


10. British news crew attacked, journalist injured

• A British television crew was ambushed outside Kyiv earlier this week, leaving one journalist wounded, their employer Sky News said.
• Stuart Ramsay, chief correspondent at Sky News, was hit by a bullet in the lower back on Monday as they drove towards the Ukrainian capital.
• Sky News showed footage of the attack late on Friday.
• Two bullets hit a camera operator`s body armour. The five-person crew escaped their car and was later rescued by Ukrainian police
