6. `Independents` dominate in Palestinian local elections

• Independent candidates dominated the Palestinian local elections, winning 64 percent of seats, up from just 37 percent five years ago, according to official results released on March 27, 2022.
• But with established parties infiltrating independent lists, analysts were not immediately able to say how far the results from Saturday`s vote truly amounted to more diverse representation.
• The polls came after Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas called off last year`s planned presidential and legislative elections, after Israel barred voting from taking place in annexed east Jerusalem

• Iraq is building a concrete wall along part of its border with Syria to stop fighters of the militant Islamic State group from infiltrating, an Iraqi military source said on March 27, 2022.
• In the `first stage` of construction, a wall around `a dozen kilometres (seven miles) long and 3.5 metres (11 feet) high was built in Nineveh province`, in the Sinjar area of northwest Iraq, a senior officer said.
• Iraq, which shares a more than 600-kilometre long border with Syria, seeks to `put as top to the in Eltration of IS members` into its territory, the source added, without specifying how long the wall would eventually run


8. New Ukraine peace talks to begin in Turkey today

• Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are to sit down for a fresh round of talks next week in an attempt to end the war in Ukraine that the UN estimates has killed at least 1,100 civilians and sent more than 3.8 million fleeing to other countries.
• Kyiv said the negotiations would start on Monday in Turkey, while Russia`s lead negotiator said they would begin on Tuesday without confirming the location.
• The prospect of fresh talks comes after the Russian army said last week that it would focus on eastern Ukraine, which some interpreted as a scaling back of Russian objections, although US President Joe Biden cast doubt on a strategy change


9. Hours after truce, coalition air strikes hit Yemen

• The Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes on March 27, 2022 on Yemen hours after Houthi rebels announced a three-day truce, with the UN chief condemning a surge in violence as the war enters its eighth year.
• The raids targeted Sanaa, the rebel held capital, according to Saudi Arabia`s Al Ekhbariya TV, which tweeted `the start of air strikes on Houthi camps and strongholds in Sanaa` at around midnight.
• The attacks came shortly after the Iran-backed Houthis announced a three-day truce and offered peace talks on condition that the Saudis stop their air strikes and blockade of Yemen and remove `foreign forces`
